Agree with you, @lmt.  I'm one who likes almost all of Kate's looks, and thinks she's a fantastic asset to the monarchy.

But this dress, to me, doesn't fit her classic, more tailored style.  It looks frumpy, to me, alas.

Part of the problem is that it is too rustic or something for her style, as mentioned.  But also, the high contrast of the white, and dark print, doesn't go with her coloring. 

She's "intermediate", or somewhat muted in coloring, not stark 'high contrast'.  Since it doesn't relate well to her personal coloring, it jumps out at you and you see it, not her as a totality.

She would have done better in Sophie's mid-green, I think.

Kate is, always, so lovely but this is not one of my favorite looks.  I don't find it very flattering on her.  My husband's comment was "Where did she get the Prairie Mary dress"...made me laugh because it did remind me of Little House on the Prairie!

The dress reminded me of the old prairie dresses and I am not a fan.  I don't think it looked well on her, but I loved her hairstyle.  She is a beauty and I generally love her clothing but this dress was a miss IMHO.

I think prairie dresses are big this Spring but it does makes me think "Goodnight, John Boy"

The green dress on the Duchess would have looked good on Kate.  Floral type print (appropriate for the occasion - particularly the green) but more sophisticated.
