Re: Sweaters/jackets without buttons

I rarely add button or snap closures to any cardigans I make - I use sweater chains or add ties.  The sweaters I buy ..... depends.  Some have buttons or snaps, some don't.  I have both kinds.

I have some spring/fall weight crochet coats with buttons and some are designed w/o closure.

City living means walking blocks in all kinds of weather - any cold weather outerwear needs buttons, snaps or zippers.  (Wrap and tie just doesn't work in windy weather.)

Re: Sweaters/jackets without buttons

I think a cardigan or jacket just looks a little more polished if there are buttons whether you use them or not.  Even though that's what I prefer, I've purchased many of them without because it was perfect otherwise.

I have some that are a little loose and if I'm walking any great distance, they'll fly open quite a bit to the point where I feel like it's going to come off my shoulders.  .  I really like it when I can use a button to avoid that happening.

Which is why I have a collection of belts.  I've actually been collecting belts and silky scarves for over 30 years.  I do indeed use them to keep open cardigans closed.

And a coat that you can't button. . .ABSURD.

On a moderate day, having a coat closed can be very warm ... and even claustrophobic.  Driving with a heavy coat closed can be somewhat restrictive, which is never a good thing, and can even be dangerous.

An open outer garment does not prevent anyone from being "pulled together", regardless as to whether the closing is button, wrap, zipper or open.

Reading these posts made me realize something ... I haven't owned or worn a sweater since I was a child.

I recall the saying ... "A sweater is something a child has to wear when their mom feels cold."

Re: Sweaters/jackets without buttons

I prefer some kind of closure on sweaters and jackets and, while I have some without, I would rather have a closure.  To me, it is a cost cutting measure, just the same as 3/4 sleevs and ankle length pants.

Re: Sweaters/jackets without buttons

I prefer my cardigans and jackets to have buttons or zippers. Having closures gives me more options on how to wear the garment. Sometimes I wear a crew neck cardigan buttoned up as a top. Couldn't do that if it didn't have buttons. I also think closures make a garment look more polished & finished.

Re: Sweaters/jackets without buttons

Is it cheaper to manufacture a coat or a sweater without closures?

I prefer my winter coats have a zipper with snaps over it. That way I can close it quickly, have it open for movement when I drive, and leave it open when I'm inside the grocery store or wherever.

OMG - let me add a resounding YESSSSS! I can't stand open front cardigans, wraps, and cuddle duds open front anything!! Why?? When it's freezing cold, who wants an open front anything? What are these designers thinking?

If it is freezing out, I am wearing a Coat!   LOL

Not a cardigan!
