Yes it can. The original poster can go in to edit her first post and can also edit the title when she clicks on edit.  The thread title will change for the begnning of the thread (as seen in the forum directory) but the title won't change as the title for responses already posted.  It will change for future responses though.  But yes, it can be changed by the OP by editing her first post.  I've done it several times on my threads to correct typos.
