I'm noticing a few new stylists/brands on Q are all on clearance. Guess that says it all.

Personally, I think a true stylist is someone born with an inate ability to put things together and have an "eye" for fashion. I think all the education in the world won't necessarily make anyone a stylist if they don't have the "IT" factor.

All of us who put our outfits together are stylist. If someone is willing to pay you to put them together, more power to you.
I am not sure that we need a credential process for every career, unless they involve health and safety, and issues of trust (like managing other people's affairs or money), and there should be no deception in representing skill and experience, but I think it is OK to become a stylist, artist, designer without degrees.
I was reading this interesting article about Joanna Gaines. Without any formal training or experience in design, decorating or cooking, together with her husband, a house flipper, built an empire including a home design TV show, a shopping complex, vacation rentals, restaurants, paint and décor lines, a Target home collection, a quarterly magazine, and coming up, a TV channel.

Totally agree.

My background is in clothing, textiles, chemistry (dyes), and Interior Design. I am constantly looking up changes in current fashion and how it relates to past fashion.
I retired from teaching and went into styling through a store. I also work with complections.
@ECBG Yes, they're are credentials, but no one can teach taste, right?
But taste is subjective, right? What I consider good taste, someone else may not.

@Caaareful Shopper wrote:"Good" is in the eye of the beholder. You don't get to dress famous people unless you have a sharp eye for whatever it is that captures the public at that time.
But to broadly answer your question, I think anyone can call themselves just about anything these days. I am so tired of the word influencer, for example. But there it is, and it seems here to stay. You can be whatever right out of the gate. But unless you can back it up with impressive credentials, it means little to me.
QVC has labeled Nancy Hornback a "Lifestyle Expert,"and she uses that title nearly every time she introduces herself in all her shows now. I don't even know what lifestyle expert means.
@Caaareful Shopper they are experts. In lifestyles. I mean how much clearer do you need it to be? ![]()

That is very subjective. One person's best possible look is another's hideous.
