Split Neck Tops - Opinions, issues, etc.

[ Edited ]

I bought a split V tunic top at Talbot's, and it arrived yesterday. I wore it out to dinner last night.

Embroidered Tunic Tee

Sometimes, as with this top, the split neckline doesn't stay flat. It falls open at the top and even folds over. It looks kind of sloppy to me, and doesn't show off the neckline as well.

What causes this? Is it the fabric, the way the neckline is cut, my body??

Is there a solution for this particular top?

I like split neck tops, and like you have had that "flop over" issue.  IMO they are not made correctly when this happens.  I think it has to do with the width of the "v".  If they make it too narrow the fabric flops.

I have a lot of these type tops.  It doesn't matter.  If it bothers you, don't get it.  If it doesn't bother you, wear it and it's fine.  I have ones that do both ways, so I simply judge by how I think it looks on that top.  Some are made to fold back and it's fine.  Some it doesn't look good.

I love split neck tops too and when one side of the V folds over, it makes me nuts! it does look sloppy to me too. I think it's because the fabric may be too soft, or the V may be too deep. whatever the reason is, if it happens and it's new, it goes right back to the store! I can't imagine there being a solution for it, especially if the soft fabric is the reason. a split V top in a more substantial fabric is a better choice, or find one that has a more shallow cut.

I think it's mostly due to the material.  If it's a soft, tee shirt material, it will flop.  If it's a stiffer, starchier material with more heft, it won't. I don't have a problem with the neckline flopping, though.  Clothes are meant to move.

I'm wondering if affixing some kind of tape inside the border of the neckline might make it stay in place.  Maybe you can ask a seamstress if it's possible.

That's a really pretty top, BTW.

@peachesncream

I looked up your top and I think the problem is this:

We've given a classic split neck tee a compelling new look with elegant front embroidery and a flattering, below-the-hip length. The elongating silhouette is even more shape-enhancing in a beautifully draping cotton/modal blend. The perfect mix of soft and supple, this feminine, summer-fresh top is easy-to-wear from sun up to sundown.

  • Three-quarter sleeves
  • Embroidered front neck panel
  • Side-slit hem
  • 27" center back
  • Hits below hips
  • 60% cotton/40% modal
  • Turn garment inside out
  • Machine wash cold
  • Imported

As a tee, the embroidery is too heavy for the fabric composition, IMO.

Probably no inter-facing.    I don't see it in the construction of many garments lately.

@peachesncream ... I don't wear the split neck tops either because of the flopping over problem. I wonder if they put a facing inside the neckline if that would help ... or maybe make it even worse?? I love V-necks ... just not split necks.

@Desertdi,

Yes, That's exactly what's wrong with that top. As a seamstress myself I would diy it with some iron-on stiff interfacing. Put it under the facing. For some this might be easier said than done though.Woman Happy

I believe I only own the one split neck and here it is.

725-504- One World Printed Velvet Fringe Trimmed Kimono & Knit Embellished Tank Top

It's a super cozy rayon/span but I suspect it's the heavily embroidered neckline that gives it structure otherwise.

I'd be really annoyed too if it didn't stand in place! I hate a garment I have to futz with throughout the day 'cause it's not where it's supposed to be!
