Re: Shrugs With Dresses

[ Edited ]

I can't read through every post as this thread is long.

However, I can't stand shrugs and I've tried a few times only to be donated. Oh I've tried.

I don't care who makes them or how but they are so outdated for all.  Skinny accentuates your thin arms and larger does you no favors either.

I am also cold natured.  I live in Florida so there is not much cold year around.

I wear a sleeveless silk blouse, and prefer to hang a pretty blazer loose over my shoulders.  I think it's chic.

And let's face it, no matter how old you are, after 50 your underarms start waving at you.  No amount of arm exercises will help that one.  Try and give them a little shake. lol.

I love shrugs. While reading this Thread, guess what popped up on my phone? Are Shrugs old Fashioned?

Here is what it says. The Shrug will always be in style. Shrug clothes will continue to be a versatile fashion piece that can transform your outfit for any occasion.

Some of my Church dresses are sleeveless and a shrug really does the job and makes the outfit look better.

For me a scarf or jean jacket won't work but I'm a shrug person.

@ECBG  I'm surprised you did come across this while doing your research.

@Sage04

They will be in extremely short supply.  The very few that are made are targeted for a "certain demographic" which is why dresses won't come with them.

refer to look modern.

@ECBG  don't do that. I could say you certainly  don't look modern in what I've seen you wear. I've never had a dress that came with a shrug. I buy the shrug I like. You love scarfs and I don't. We can't all like the same things.

I was also a fashion designer when I lived in NY and NJ for years and I was good at what I did. My husband was the Manager and I was one of the designers. Guess what. I got tired of dealing with the models so we moved to Florida and I opened up a day care. A lot better dealing with children.

I wear what I want and always look good whether I wear shrugs or not.

You wear what you think looks best on you but we all don't have to agree.

A certain demographic. That's funny. I can say the same thing for wearing a scarf. Certain Demographic.

This look above will always be in style.  It's classic and widely available by different designers and stores.  I've seen it called other names such as topper, cropped sweater, etc.

@San Antonio Gal   I have a few of those and wear them with sleeveless dresses. No bare upper arms for me, and they cover elbows too.

It's sometimes mind boggling trying to keep up. And I'm into keeping up with fashion trends. Not being trendy, per se, just keeping up with what's fresh and "in." But it can drive you a bit nuts as there's lots of "opinions" and things written, "out there."

I've been wondering about shrugs myself lately.

I still own some, have worn them still up to last year. I have one, coral color, "bolero" type, Liz Claiborne, from Q 12 years ago (for sure dated!) I keep it, but don't wear it much anymore. Goes with lots of my summer sundresses, tho'.

I have one of the "netting" type, with the long tails... ivory, have still worn it in recent years. Those were big when I worked retail 10 years ago...so they feel dated now to me, but I still see them.

One very cropped, turquoise one, from Banana Republic, circa 2011, I used to wear with only one southwestern printed dress it always looked great with. I'll probably retire that one; last year I wore a little cropped jean jacket with that dress instead. I wear that & a white jean jacket the most for casual summer dresses. Jean jackets are always in style, to me...and suit my style. But more dressed up needs something else.

I just Googled, and it does seem "shrugs are making a comeback for 2024." Maybe the styles that are in are updated.

The thing that made me really think they were dated was watching episodes of Gilmore Girls from about 2005...they have Lorelai in beautiful dresses with matching, cropped shrugs almost every time she has a dress on. They really look "of that time."

So...I'll probably do the jean jacket more this year. That's my style...but wraps, especially the cashmere ones and toppers also, can be very stylish, elegant. Still if you have a shrug that works, maybe an updated style not so "recognizable" as "of that time" I think they're ok too.

Totally agree @San Antonio Gal! I think that's the ticket right there! Shrugs are necessary for dresses. They are the only thing you can wear with a dress that doesn't cut into the lines and style of showing off the dress! Doesn't cover up the dress or a woman's figure in it. I believe they were developed specifically for that reason! Btw, who's shrug is that? I could use one! Smiley Happy

@amyb  -  I copied that picture from message #46.  Hoping @cotton4me can tell us where she got the pic.  I like it too.

For those that are saying these shrugs/toppers are outdated, what are we supposed to wear over sleeveless dresses, etc?  Denim jackets only?

I always wear a shrug with a maxi dress, I like the look. Shrugs are definitely not outdated, but if you think they are don't wear one.
