Shopaholics One Day at a Time, Monday, November 3rd

Good Morning/Afternoon!  It was pretty chilly again this morning, but we are expecting a high in the upper 80's.  No rain in the foreseeable future.  I am okay with this weather -- much prefer it to cold days and freezing nights.  But, I know several of you who would not be happy campers.

Unfortunately, I did not hear back from the lady in charge of another Sheriff's Auxiliary Volunteer job, so I have the day off.  I say unfortunately, because I really enjoy volunteering.  Oh well....  It will give me a chance to do some much-needed cleaning.

Not sure if I mentioned it, but my SIL's job ends on Friday.  Long story, but it is very unsettling to say the least.  DD is working part-time, and hopefully will get some more hours.  But, she would not be eligible for benefits (like health care) unless she were able to work full-time.  And, the pharmacy where she works does not have any full-time positions available.

Long story short, not only will they be missing their major income source, but also their health benefits until he finds another job.  They are hoping to get COBRA, but no one from HR has been available to help him with starting the program.

Needless to say, I am extremely concerned about this.  I will do as much as I can (financially) to help.

Waves to Fressa, Bernie, Susan, Barbara, Glenda, and all of our posters and readers.

Hope everyone has a nice evening.  Please post if you have a chance.

Hugs,

Linda

Linda @LindaLatte  I am so sorry that your son in law is getting jerked around like this.  The last update that I remember was something along the lines of being safe until January?

What I remember is neither here nor there.  Right now is the only thing that matters and I feel bad for your family.

Re: Shopaholics One Day at a Time, Monday, November 3rd

It's been kind of quiet in my part of the world.  Just the usual fall activities like raking leaves, lol.  We are expecting temps to drop and precipitation to increase this weekend.  Since it's clear and sunny with a forecasted high near 60 degrees, I'm going to string up my Christmas lights around the patio.  I won't plug them in until after Thanksgiving.  I've strung lights up when it's cold and wearing gloves is not compatible with gutter clips (lol).

There is a chance of snow flurries I think Sunday into Monday.

A family on my block put up their Christmas tree on November 1st.  It's lit up and on display in the picture window.  I smiled when I saw it and thought of a song from the play/movie Mame - we need a little Christmas right this very minute Woman Very Happy

LindaLatte--I will cross my fingers that your SIL and DD have some good luck with employment. That bad news is always so close to the holiday season it puts a knot in my stomach. Health benefits in any level makes me shake my head. It's so expensive and still you have balance due. I don't know how a person can plan with what is a "normal" amount of care. We have decent coverage and purcased the level up for the dental for my husband. We still had a balance due of $1200 for one tooth! MY bf had a similar tooth issue and her balance was almost $2700! I just don't know you guess what you might need.

Re: Shopaholics One Day at a Time, Monday, November 3rd

Hi Everyone!

We have a bit of a warming trend today and thru the end of the week. So odd for this time of the year. I see a few of the neighbors are decorating for Christmas. I hope to put the outside decorations up as well. I have to decide what I'm putting where. I'm trying to really downsize this year because we have so much going on with the inside projects. Not my best planning but.....

The Q certainly had lots of holiday programs. I was tempted but only caved a few times to order pj's or/and casual pants. I'm pleased with those purchases so that's my motivation not to purchase anything else. I'm such a sucker for lights and colored glass items. LOL i'm trying to remind myself that I still might need to purchase tires for my Crosstrek. I think I should be able to make it until Spring but you just never know with some of the roads/hills around here.

We keep bagging leaves every Sunday thinking it will be the last week of that chore. It does appear that we'll have another week and that will end it. I'm crossing my fingers that the township  will still be sending the extra truck for pick up on Monday.

Have a good afternoon/evening.

Re: Shopaholics One Day at a Time, Monday, November 3rd

Good Afternoon/Evening!  I think I remember you did the same thing with your Christmas lights last year, Bernie -- good idea.  We rarely have very cold weather by Thanksgiving, so I usually wait to put out my few outdoor decorations until then.  I have cut out most of them because I do not like to climb ladders.

You are correct -- at one point, my SIL was supposed to continue his job until the end of the year.  It is such a long story, but that "offer" was contingent on him taking over three new government contracts and working many, many extra hours.

His new boss is/was a nightmare -- constantly putting him down (calling him stupid, etc.) and yelling profanities at him over the phone -- so loud that my DD could hear him in another part of the house.  The boss kept threatening to fire him unless he was on-call 24-7.  After one of these unreasonable sessions, my SIL decided he just could not stand it any longer.  So, it was his decision to resign.

Despite all the money worries, etc., my DD supported his decision and so do I.

Interesting about your weather, Fressa.  It continues to be cool in the morning and warm/hot in the afternoon.  I am fine with it.  I do not have dental insurance, so I hope I don't need any major dental work.  The one year I had dental insurance, I ended up losing money on the deal (still had to pay part of the cleanings and did not need any other work).  You have to be very smart at predicting your medical needs.

The TSV tree really appeals to me, but the price is way, way more than I care to pay.  Also, I bought a new small Bethlehem lights tree last year -- less lights and not as full, but the price was $60 which I thought was high enough.  I also have another small (but slightly larger) tree that I put in the living room.  It is hard for me to resist buying something new, but I'm working on it.

Re: Shopaholics One Day at a Time, Monday, November 3rd

Good evening ladies, hope all is well.

Linda - I feel very sorry for your DD family, and you SIL.  No one should have to tolerate a boss like that.  I would have quit also.  I hope he can find a new job quickly.

Fressa - Glad you are enjoying your purchases.  Anymore I hate to order clothes, I always seem to be sending them back.  I usually just go to the store and try them on.  I know you don't get the variety as you would in a catalog or on the Q, but tired of paying return freight charges.  Hope you stay ahead of the leaves.

Bernie - I used to get on DH to put up the lights while it was warm out.  One year he waited until after Thanksgiving and it was so cold.  I told him never again.  So we would put them up when the weather was still warm but not turn on until after Thanksgiving.

Well, DH and I finally got rid of the bug that we had, it turned into a really bad head and chest cold.  DH went for his follow up with his GP and he said DH did have the start of pneumonia, we were never old this even after he left the hospital.

Went out and deadheaded 6 rose bushes today and my back is paying for it now.  Our weather was beautiful today (62 degrees), but they are calling for snow flurries early next week (not ready for that yet).  We will see what happens, the snow won't stick, but just don't want to see it yet.

Well off to make supper, hope everyone has a great evening.

Re: Shopaholics One Day at a Time, Monday, November 3rd

Good Evening!  Glad you and your DH are over the "bug", Susan.  Strange that no one mentioned pneumonia until so late.  One of my fellow Sheriff's Auxiliary volunteers told me that she had laryngitis and went to urgent care where they blamed her tonsils.  It was the first time she ever had that diagnosis.  Fortunately, strong antibiotics ("horse pills") knocked it out.  She sure didn't want to have surgery (she has had a lot of surgery for other problems).

It was busy this morning at the Sheriff's Auxiliary -- variety of issues, including fingerprinting, scams, requests for house checks, etc.  I enjoyed being busy, but it was not easy for me to get there in the morning because my walk time was limited, etc.

The scams seem to get worse and more and more common.  One of the latest is crooks being able to mess with the title to your house and take out loans, etc. without your knowledge and consent.  I was talking to the head of the "scam squad", and he said it is not easy to remedy the situation.  Yikes!

I had gone to the grocery store and Walmart yesterday afternoon, and then to Sprouts this afternoon.  I was surprised that they lacked a couple of ingredients I wanted.  Interestingly enough, I checked the Walmart website, and it appears that they have red lentils and bulgur.

I have an OLLI Zoom class tomorrow morning and work at the Sheriff's Auxiliary in the afternoon.

Nothing new from DD about my SIL.  But, there is a very good chance his flight to Boise on Monday will be canceled.  I know that will be a blow to him and my oldest DGS and family since he/they were so eager to have him visit.

Waves to Susan, Fressa, Bernie, Barbara (please post when you are able to do so), and all of our posters and readers.

Hope everyone sleeps well.

Re: Shopaholics One Day at a Time, Monday, November 3rd

Hi Everyone!

Our weather finally matches the forecat for today.  They finally got one correct. It's cloudy, cold, some rain and wind gusts. I really need to put the Christmas lights and the Frosty in the ground this weekend before it snows.  I probably should have done that sooner when I saw the other neighbors putting up their outside lights. I'm still pre-occupied with the wallpaper removal. UGH!!!

I've only watched a few QVC Holiday programs. I'm trying not to temp myself and focus on the home project and the budget. They do seem to have more holiday programs this year or maybe it's just a different title. I can't keep track anymore. It seems like they are pairing the hosts differently but sometimes I think there are too many people on the set and not enough information about the product.

Hopefully...those that are traveling have a flight and it arrives on time. I remember when I was flying back and forth out west that I always hit weather (snow) issues. It taught me to have carry on luggage only.

We now have an older buck,1 young buck, 4 fawns and 2 baby fawns in our woods next to the side yard. Hopefully they will all make it thru this fall/winter season. The younger ones have more of a challenge but there seems to be enough in the woods for their food supply. I do wish the back yard bushes were not on their snack list. LOL I have zero luck with trying to grow bushes and trees.

LindaLatte---That morgage fraud scam scares me. It seems like there is more and more of that happening everywhere.

Our township newsletter has been listing articles on the rise in health issues with respiratory illness in our area.  It does seem to be more of a guessing game or process of elimination rather than a firm result. The respiratory issue seems to be a constant. I do not se any relief from one season to the next around here. I had a doctor tell me that I need to live in Alaska if I want that result. I think that he was probably right.

Have a good afternoon/evening.

Re: Shopaholics One Day at a Time, Monday, November 3rd

Good Evening!  Your weather sure doesn't sound good to me, Fressa. It was pretty chilly when I took my walk this morning (upper 40's) and I ended up wearing a warmer jacket than I planned.  I passed by a neighbor walking his small dog, and she was wearing a pretty pink sweater.  I mentioned it, and he said she is old so feels the cold more these days.  True of me as well.  But, it was beautiful this afternoon -- not too hot or cold.

Hope your wildlife make it, and don't eat your bushes/plants.

The Sheriff's Auxiliary was not busy this afternoon, but not too bad.  I finally heard from the lady in charge of the volunteers who "patrol" the thrift store.  It doesn't sound like I will get much work there (quite a few volunteers already), but I am going for an orientation next Thursday morning.

My SIL still has not heard about his flights to visit my oldest great grandson and family in Idaho.  He is supposed to go Monday morning, but it sounds like flying will be a nightmare with many cancellations, delays, etc.  I saw pictures of people waiting in the TSA lines for hours.  Yikes!

DD told me that quite a few of the clients at the pharmacy are having difficulty paying for their medications.  Some are not picking up their prescriptions, buying only one of several prescriptions, or asking that the number of pills be reduced.  Also, some are refusing the medications when she tries to deliver.  It is so sad to see people in this position.  And, the pharmacy manager is very concerned about the reduction in business.

I do not usually watch (like pay full attention to) many Q programs, except when I am doing the bills or cooking as a bit of a distraction.  But, I do look at the products presented.  I am trying not to be tempted to order something that is not a need.  It sure isn't easy to resist, but I know DD will need some financial help until my SIL finds another job, and there are so many people who need the basics (like food) that I would like to help.
