SHOPAHOLICS: ONE DAY AT A TIME (WEDNESDAY, AUG.. 22)

Good morning, shopping friends. The day started doing what it does best lately---raining. I was up at 5am to put the trash out. I've been watching the Weather Channel coverage of the hurricane heading for Hawaii--my heart still remains there as I love the area.

I saw the pumpkin picking thread and all I can think of now is how I would like a pumpkin spice flavored latte....or anything pumpkin flavored. This is what I consider a Fall highlight and skip the turkey on Thanksgiving Day. Just give me a pumpkin pie!

I checked my order status. My white gold earring TSV has finally shipped via US Mail. When checking the link, it is actually UPS Mail Innovations. Currently it has moved from a location fairly close to a location almost 600 miles south. Who knows where it will go from there? If it had gone by regular US Mail, it would have been here in two days or three at the most. I'm beginning to lose interest in those earrings. QVC should take lessons from Amazon on timely delivery,

I'm just now seeing the TSV. This non-cooking person really doesn't have a need for a multi-use silicone set as what I have does the job.

Have a great day. If you shop, shop wisely. Prayers for all facing illness of loss of a family member.

Re: SHOPAHOLICS: ONE DAY AT A TIME (WEDNESDAY, AUG.. 22)

Good Mornng Jean @KonaKat

It turned out to be a good idea that I did the yardwork on Monday because we got rain yesterday.  It looks pretty cloudy out there right now and I'm wondering if we are going to get more.

I've been researching furnace brands and reviews and HVAC installers and reviews.  Wow, talk about falling down the rabbit hole Woman Surprised There is so much to consider when shopping for a new furnace/AC these days.

If the Dept of Energy hadn't changed the regulations for AFUE (efficiency) a few years ago I probably would not be this stressed out.

If I understand it correctly (after reading the regs) those of us in the North have to install a furnace with a minimum AFUE of 90%.  These kinds of furnaces can't vent out of the chimney as the get hot.  It has something to do with condesate versus non condesate (huh Woman Embarassed)  This means the HVAC installers put two holes in your wall to the outside of your house and the intake and the output is accommodated with PVC pipes.

Ewww - that looks really funky and tacky to me.

These pipes aren't that far off the ground so there is a risk a bratty kid could stick something in them.  Also, an animal could get in them and die in the furnace.

Re: SHOPAHOLICS: ONE DAY AT A TIME (WEDNESDAY, AUG.. 22)

Hello Ladies...rained a lot during the night and now looks like the sun is trying to come out....according to the weather guys the next several days will be beautiful.....we shall see.      I think the last big Hurricane to hit Kauai was Iniki in 92.  we had been there that March to a new place ( where the conference was held ) and a few of the workers told me something bad was going to happen here..when  they were building the golf course some graves  were moved to a different spot...and had all the natives in an uproar.  when the hotel was finished the " priest" refused to come back and bless the hotel.....the hotel was  pretty much destroyed...we had seen pictures of furniture floating in the waters of the beach.....etc.

Bernie we had anew furnance a/c put in a few years ago and have that " pipe" sticking out of the side of the foundation.  I don't think it's low enough for any animal to go in and where it is on our house it can't been seen, our property is  far from  the other houses and a kid would have to be really far in our yard.  in the winter when it's very cold you can see the exhaust coming out.

Not much else going on.....have a nice day everyone.     Marijane

Bernie--I agree that those pipes look a little odd. My entire HVAC unit is located outside of the house with the ductwork extending throughout the house I think the whole unit is a bit distracting. I did have  lattice work paneling put up around it to hide it.

Marijane--the natives can get very uptight when graves are relocated from formerly blessed and considered religious grounds. The H3 on Oahu was delayed for a long time for the same reason. There is a history of events happening when blessed grounds are disturbed.

I guess I'd better fix some lunch and then see if there is anything I can get into. I just don't feel very good, so perhaps I will be lazy. This headache keeps nagging me.  The rain has stopped and the sun has finally come out.

Re: SHOPAHOLICS: ONE DAY AT A TIME (WEDNESDAY, AUG.. 22)

Good morning everyone,  Oh how I wish that CA could get your rain.  It's sad that half of our country has an excess, while the other half has a lack.

I just got done watering in the yard - something that gets tedious by mid-August.  In a little while I will be going out to run errands.  I will go by the grocery store, the bank, drop books off at the library's used book store, and maybe 1 or 2 other stops.  I'll get it all done at once.

I felt frustrated yesterday as I was scanning photos, and every once-in-a-while the scanner would act glitchy.  My tolerance level for things like that has never been high.  I've been having fun reading the "purge" thread while I scan.  Fun seeing Jean and Bernie post there.  Also spent a lot of time looking at my investments, wondering if there are any changes I should make.  Decisions, Decisions.

Oh, and I also read the pumpkin patch thread Jean.  It make me snicker.  Most of the time I don't mind QVC hosts suggesting different ways viewers can use or wear items for sale, but it can get a little funny when the same spiel is repeated over and over and over.  I own quite a few Susan Graver tops, but even I get half-catatonic hearing the repeated phrases..."It's all about the fit", "It's all about building wardrobes", "If you spill something on it, just use a little soap and water", "It's about about smoke and mirrors", "It's all about the fabric", "It's all about being figure flattering", etc. etc. etc.  But when hosts and vendors have to keep up a constant flow of talk for hours, they're bound to start repeating phrases.  I cut them slack because I know that I couldn't do any better.

With that, I need to get ready to run the errands, or I'll never leave my nice air-conditioned house.  Hope you all have a great day!  ~  Charlene

Re: SHOPAHOLICS: ONE DAY AT A TIME (WEDNESDAY, AUG.. 22)

Charlene--I got a chuckle out of your sales spiel phrases which we have all heard. I've heard that one of the audition deals is that the possible host is given an item and told to "sell it." Can you imagine coming up with enough to fill at least ten minutes of time or even more?

I agree about the weather issue. Mother Nature needs to evaluate where the rain is actually needed and send it there. I understand Australia is having a drought now.

Enjoy running your errands. I should motivate myself to go to the Post Office to get the mail ad the drugstore to pick up a refill, but it is so comfy here.

Bernie . I went outside to measure my pipe..it sticks out obout 9 inches and it is 32 inches or so off the ground.....it also has some sort of cap on it so nothing can really get in thru the opening......We only have the 1 pipe andit's straight.  i don't know how to post pictures on qvc site...

Charlene I never think to go and read other threads on here....I should go and check the pumpkin patch one.....I agree it must be hard to talk about a product on and on.  I hope you get all your scanning done....I have never done that myself.....when it comes to anything like that my kids do it for me when they come.

it has gotten pretty dark out now....looks like we are in for some more rain.

I went to town to get the mail and to pick up my prescription refills. That cost me  $60+ for my co-pay. I really like a top I've been wearing around the house and thought it would be a good idea to replace it as I like it as well as the vivid blue color. Alas, it is on clearance and my size is gone. A240620,

I did go hunting and found a similar shade in an SG butterknit top which I also have. Since it is also on clearance, it is coming home to me at $10 less than what I paid for the last one.

Linda--I was thinking about the lack of response from the dealership. Around here, people buy cars from dealerships with a reputation for a great service department. The position of t hese dealerships is that a great service department keeps the customers coming in even if it is for a routine service. Keeping them hooked is a way to keep them in mind when buying a car.

Re: SHOPAHOLICS: ONE DAY AT A TIME (WEDNESDAY, AUG.. 22)

Good Morning/Afternoon and thanks for getting us started, Jean.  It is sunny here, but they are predicting some rain later.  Not very much rain, but......  I have a little headache myself, but I am sure it is because I didn't sleep well last night.  I keep going over things, and it keeps me awake.  No TSV for me either.  It is strange how the Q ships things.  I received the TSV bench via UPS ground, and it came from the East Coast.  The second one I ordered more recently is coming by UPS ground, but from California.  Amazon is definitely faster for most things, and even the slower items usually arrive faster than those from the Q.  Probably due to our location.

Interesting about the HVAC and pipes, Bernie.  I don't remember how it worked in Maryland, but here we have one of those smaller type pipes to vent the dryer outside.  It is fairly close to the ground, and has a flap on it.  I do clean it out periodically, but no issues so far.

One of the things that kept me up last night was reading about DH's investments, or at least some of them.  I thought it would be a good idea for me to have some idea about what the financial guy is talking about when I see him tomorrow.  As I told his kids, he was a smart and financially aware guy, but not true for me.  But, I don't want to be "suckered" into decisions that will cut into their inheritance too much. Not sure if that is clear, but....

Interesting story about the burial ground in Hawaii, Marijane.  Sounds like the builders should do a lot of research before putting up a hotel or whatever.

You made me chuckle with the description of the selling jargon on the Q, Charlene.  I remember one of the hosts said that she had to talk about a pencil for her audition.  You need to be rather talented to come up with much to say about these items.  Not a job I could do.  I don't read too many of the other threads, but I know some can be entertaining.  We could use some of their rain as well.

I looked at that top, Jean, but they only had one color in my size, and not one of my favorites.  Whew!  Dodged another bullet there.

Good news on the car.  After calling the dealership four times -- leaving a message each time -- and not getting a call back, I ended up doing some research.  Not sure if I told this story, but I found that they had a horrible reputation for service.  But, I found a garage with high ratings, and they told me to bring the car in this morning.  Turns out that the mechanic who changed my oil didn't get the cap on right, and broke (?) I think the gasket.  The mechanic just tightened things, and told me that I should not have problems until I had my next oil change.  But, they found that the belt for the AC was cracked badly.  So, I ended up having that belt plus another one that was in front of that belt replaced.  The cost was quite reasonable, and I could just sit and wait for my car.  There was a lady there, and we spent most of the time talking -- very nice person who moved here from CA since it was an easier (much less expensive) place to raise their four kids.  Anyway, I am delighted to find a reliable place, and I won't be taking it back to the other garage or the dealer again unless there is a recall or something.

Now I am waiting for the handyman to replace the screen door.  I guess I will try to do some more cleaning while he does the job.

Waves to all of our posters and readers.  Hope everyone has a nice day!

Hugs,

Linda

P.S. I took in my cardboard piece and showed it to the mechanic -- not sure if it helped, but......

Re: SHOPAHOLICS: ONE DAY AT A TIME (WEDNESDAY, AUG.. 22)

Linda--Being on top of financial investments and making sure that the disbursements are handled properly is enough to give you a headache. I'm sure that you will be prepared when you meet to discuss it. I'm glad you found the source of the problem and you have located a trusted place to turn to for future needs.

Dodging the bullet? This is the SG top I ended up buying: A214177.
