Re: SHOPAHOLICS ONE DAY AT A TIME (TUESDAY, OCT.4)

Good Evening, sorry your migraine got in the way of your testing, Fressa.  Hope you will feel better tomorrow.

Sounds like you are having a fun trip, Glenda.  I will be praying you have a safe trip home. Hope the deer don't run across the highway when you are driving.  That can be a hazard for sure.  I remember one ran into my brother's truck and another ran into my Dad's car.  Not good.  Enjoy the QVC outlet.  Good news about your DGS.

Waves to all of our posters and readers.  I had a busy day with two OLLI classes (one via Zoom and one in person).  Then, I stopped by the senior lunch program to drop off two banana breads that I made yesterday evening (they had some very overripe bananas.)

The hospice mailings were supposed to be ready today, but the chaplain had so many (he lacked necessary stationary for a month), that they were not.  I will pick them up tomorrow morning -- hopefully I will finish in time to mail them tomorrow.  I usually do the supply deliveries on Thursday, but that won't happen until Friday.

Due to all these schedule issues, I decided to do my grocery shopping today rather than tomorrow.  I was pleased that one grocery store had several produce items -- like celery and red onions on sale for 99 cents a pound.  A real sale for a change.  After a discussion the other day, I decided to look for some fig preserves.  I used to really like them, but had not eaten them for years.  And, I found some in a different grocery store.  So, grocery shopping was more fun than in recent trips.

My DGD has her tonsils removed tomorrow, and my gym buddy Larry is having treatment (he called it zapping) for his bladder cancer that has come back.  Hopefully, both of them will be fine.  Good thoughts and prayers would be appreciated.

Sleep well everyone.

Hugs,

Linda

Twinny 70--Sounds like you are having a wonderful trip. I'm sending prayers for your safe travels and keeping our fingers and paws crossed that Christopher reeives multiple job offers.

I love seeing the deer. I find it peachful and just think they are graceful creatures. I find them interesting that the does will take turns taking the fawns out for walks.

Glad you found good food along the way. I always thought that was the best thing about road trips. (finding the unusal stop that turned into something specials.)

LindaLatte- Sending prayers for your DGD and the tonsils operation and your gym buddy, Larry with his bladder cancer.

So happy to hear that you found some true sales with your grocery shopping. Every dollar saved counts extra these days. It's nice to find most things on the list without too many inflated prices.

Re: SHOPAHOLICS ONE DAY AT A TIME (TUESDAY, OCT.4)

Although I enjoyed the first fence estimate experience, I'm working on getting a second one.  Since we're looking at late March I think it's better to have one or two more estimates so that I can make an informed choice.

@Bird mama  You will be smart to get 3 estimates...check references and the BBB  I would not give more than the down payment.

We had to go to court to resolve an issue with a bad contractor.😜

Re: SHOPAHOLICS ONE DAY AT A TIME (TUESDAY, OCT.4)

Barbara @sydsgma1  Funny you should mention BBB.  When I looked at the estimate there was a note that it was good for 30 days.  I said, okay 30 days then?  Guy says they had to add it because of a BBB complaint.  Apparently someone got a quote in 2018 and expected it to be valid in 2021.  Of course he assured me that it didn't apply to me.  Woman Wink

That is the only BBB complaint against the company and it was resolved.  What gave me pause was the fine print about responsibility near the bottom of the page.

I accept responsibility for the lot line and placement of the fence.  I'm the homeowner and that should fall on me.  I accept responsibility for telling the contractors if there is any cabling, sprinkler system and any weird wiring/gas/electrical on my property.  Folks do strange things that Miss Digg may not know about - their role is to ID gas, electric and water.

What made me feel some kind of way was the comment that I am responsible for all aspects of the fence job.  If there is damage done by the fence company and anyone (including me) has a problem, it's my responsibility.

I read that statement at least 15 times to make sure I was understanding what it was that they were saying.  I even broke down the sentences to make sure I got the first few words, then the next few words and then they last few words.  I couldn't help but think - uh wait a minute, you want me to accept responsibility for the quality of work that your crew does.  They could come in like a wrecking ball and it's my problem?

99% of the job involves dirt/land - there are no cables, gas, electrical, water or anything that a fence installer could destroy.

The remaining 2% is what is bothering me.  This is not my house however this is the same setup

Chain Link Fence Installation Chicago | First Fence Company

In this photo, we see the gate latches to a post that is set in concrete.  In my case the chain link gate and post are next to the attached garage.  The fence company is going to have to remove the metal post and replace it with the post for the vinyl gate.  Is the estimate suggesting I'm responsible for skill or lack thereof of the fence installers?

On the other side of the house is almost the same set up minus the gate.  In the photo above we see there is a gap between the fence post and the house.  On this side of my house the AC piping comes from the outside AC unit, runs along the side of the house through the gap between the post and the house and then into my basement.  There's not alot of room there.  How skilled are the guys that are gonna remove that post?  I had new HVAC installed in September 2021.  If they hit my AC line am I on the hook?

The estimate was done by a guy who worked in sales for General Electric for 15 years and BCBSM Medicare Advantage for 2 years.  It's a small world and I run into former BCBSM employees all of the time.  Nice guy, not pushy - sales guy, never installed a fence in his lifetime.

The next estimate is coming from a small business - like 4 to 6 people small.  I can't find a bad thing said about them and even mentioned the company to the first guy, lol.  I'm curious to see how this estimate goes - the young man coming over does it for a living.

I do have a third company that I'm thinking about calling for an estimate.

I'd like to think I'm a fair and reasonable person.  I would like to get a good value for the price I'm about to pay however I'm a believer that you get what you pay for.  When it comes time to clear the land by the back fence could I go cheap and get any old tree company out?  Yeah.  My trees run through high voltage power lines that connect the community so I will be hiring someone skilled and insured for that type of thing.

All this for a stinkin fence.  I'm gonna lose my mind when I get ready to do the windows, siding and gutters Woman Tongue

Re: SHOPAHOLICS ONE DAY AT A TIME (TUESDAY, OCT.4)

Good Afternoon/Evening!  Thanks for your prayers for DGD.  DD said everything went well.  She had already picked up some food that would be easy to eat, but needed to pick up medicine.  One of the medications is a prescription lollipop ($10 each).  I guess that would be particularly good for a young child, but DGD is 22.  LOL

Anyway, I am happy the surgery is over, and all went well.

I was pretty surprised about the sales at the grocery store, Fressa.  Unfortunately, they will probably raise the prices quite a bit next week.

I agree with Barbara and you, good idea to get more estimates for the fence, Bernie.  Try not to stress yourself too much.  Those sorts of clauses in contracts can drive me crazy.  Hope you are able to get some answers and find the right company to do the job.

There were a lot of letters from hospice, but no problems with doing them.  I plan to mail them after I go to the gym.

I received some very sad news about my newcomer's friend, Kitty passing away.  We used to walk around the neighborhood and chat, and drove to many functions together.  In May of last year, she and her husband decided to sell their house and move back to Wyoming to be closer to family.  I knew that she was having some memory problems, but didn't realize how bad things were.  She had been in hospice and died peacefully, thank goodness.

Need to go to the gym now.  Waves to all of our posters and readers.  Hope everyone has a nice evening.

Hugs,

Linda

Re: SHOPAHOLICS ONE DAY AT A TIME (TUESDAY, OCT.4)

Linda L, glad that your dgs's surgery went well and prayers for Larry. You got some good deals at the grocery store.

Bird Mama, Windows, siding and roof should be easier than the fence job.

Fressa, we are thrilled that Christopher has so many job interviews.  He is a good student and will be graduating from college a semester early.  His two siblings will be graduating next year.  Yikes.  Unless things change.

We left VA this morning and drove to the QVC Outlet Store in Lancaster,  PA.   It took about 4 hours because of some road construction.  I hadn't been to it in 5 years, so it was a lot of fun.

Thank goodness we didn't see any deer.

Lancaster is a beautiful Amish town.  Today we saw a farmer picking pumpkins and the other one was picking corn. We can sit outside at the motel and see them.

We had lunch at the Shady Maple Buffet Restaurant.  It's always busy, good food and we have been there several times before.

I wanted to buy 2 denim skorts by IM for $15 from $60, but the dressing room was closed temporarily and I didn't want to have to return them.   All of the clothes that I looked at were 75% off.  I will be going back again.  SG $60 items were $15.  $40 things for $10.

VPH things were 50% off, but looked cheap compared to what she had there last time I was in the store.  Lots of Christmas things, but nothing that I was interested in.

Shoes and handbags were about 40-50%  or more off, but I don't need a bag and the shoes weren't comfortable.

Its a beautiful 70's day today and tomorrow.  Then cooler weather for the weekend.

Tomorrow morning we are going to the QVC Outlet Store in Fraser. It's about 40minutes away.

We have a motel for tonight and tomorrow night.  Near lots of stores and restaurants.  On Saturday we will be heading to Shipshewana, IN for a day or so.  It's very Amish.

Hugs to all of you.

Linda @LindaLatte   I'm sorry to hear the news about Kitty.  I'm glad that her transition was a peaceful one and that her husband is near family at this time.
