SHOPAHOLICS: ONE DAY AT A TIME (SUNDAY, SEPT. 13)

Good morning, shopping friends. When I typed the date, it dawned upon me that the month is almost half over. How are we doing with our goals for the month?

I'm still plugging along, trying to watch impulse purchases and using those questions of "Have I had anything like this?" "If so, how often did you use it?" "Do you currently have items in this style or color?" I could keep listing but taking time to think of your current and past possessions will help you i making wiser purchases.

I know some keep an inventory on their computer of all their purchases, so they will not duplicate infrequently used purchases that may have gone forgotten. I don't do that.  Would I refer to it? I have a wish list on QVC where I park items of interest but the reality is that I rarely visit it and when I do visit it in order to delete items, I often find the items sold out, etc. or they were items I had completely forgotten. That is a sign it was not that important to purchase in the beginning when I put it on the wish list. I guess I use the wish list more for parking an item when in doubt, just as I use the check status to reserve an item I feel strongly about but want to wait to see if something better materializes, etc.

I was up around 6am today and have managed to do some odds and ends around the house. I am now taking a break from sorting things into "keep," "donate," "trash," and "?" piles or bags.  Right now, I'm not booked to work tomorrow but if not, I can use the break to continue this work streak at home and also to relax.

I am debating the TSV, and also saw the SunJoe yard vacuum, etc. presented again. I missed it when a TSV as I debated it. It is things like this rather than clothes right now that tempt me. I saw the thread on "Clothing Lines---Days Gone By" or something like that. It caused me to think of my first fashion purchase from the Q. It was a Fashion Formulas two skirt and jacket in Navy with red accents. I loved that outfit. 20+ years later, I don't remember outfits as well as I do that one.

Have a great day. If you shop, shop wisely and remember to focus upon the positives.

Re: SHOPAHOLICS: ONE DAY AT A TIME (SUNDAY, SEPT. 13)

Hi Jean, thanks for starting the thread this morning.  Even though I've made a few purchases within the past 30 days, I'd like to think that I made wise choices.  I tried to stick with classics that will serve me for a couple of years.

When I saw the Sunjoe yard tool advertised in the insider back in July, I believe it was scheduled to be a TSV on or around 8-11.  At that time the old Sunjoe yard tool was still available and tall customers complained that they had to stoop over to use it.  So, I held off and continue to check the reviews of this newer version to see if any tall people are having the same problem (lol).

I have a spreadsheet of my QVC purchases dating back to the beginning (2008).  For the most part, I used it to rate what I bought - what an eye opener.  I donated quite a few things that at the time of purchase were 'had to have' for me.  This dramatically curbed my spending starting at the end of 2013.

I have one pair of American West earrings on my wish list.  I want them but am patient enough to wait for a price drop.

I suppose I should get to the grocery store and get that over with for the week (lol).

Re: SHOPAHOLICS: ONE DAY AT A TIME (SUNDAY, SEPT. 13)

Bernie--I'm sure that you have made wise choices. I know that the items you posted seemed to be great choices. Unless it is an item or line I've used before, I no longer bite on the TSV automatically. The price difference afterwards is not enough to encourage early shopping. I haven't bit on the current TSV yet. It went into the cart but I've not hit "submit."

I remember when Judith Ripka had the bracelet TSV at a great price. I liked it and got it on wait list as a treat for being good. I was checking my orders and ran across it. I had forgotten all about it, so I decided it wasn't that important to me and cancelled the waitlist orfer.  I didn't check the latest reviews on it but I remember mixed reviews shortly after the TSV was presented.

I used to find shopping exciting, even window shopping. When in a new city, etc., I'd often check out the shopping. Now, I really have to talk myself into it. A mall is a mall is a mall. I remember when the Mall of America first opened, it had some unique stores. The last time I was there, it seemed that each level tended to duplicate stores found on other levels. I even remember the little QVC store that was available there. I guess I don't have the energy to go into all those stores and comparison shop now, especially if I have no specific item in mind.

Re: SHOPAHOLICS: ONE DAY AT A TIME (SUNDAY, SEPT. 13)

Good Morning!  Thanks for getting us started Jean.  Sounds like you have been busy sorting this morning.  I won't be able to do that sort of thing this morning, and maybe not today.  But, I have been doing some sorting when I put things back into the kitchen cabinets.  Our neighbor/builder was here pretty early this morning (a bit after 7:00), putting the trim around some of the cabinets -- what a difference that makes.

Not sure how much he will be doing today, and I will be going to church in an hour or so.  After church, DH and I will be going to the gym.

Like you, I'm in the house purchase mode right now, rather than clothing.  I was looking for some things for the kitchen yesterday (could not find them, but....), and I didn't even glance at the clothes, etc. at Ross.  I am pretty sure a Home Depot visit is in order, just not sure if I'm up to it today.

Hi Bernie -- good for you keeping track of all your orders, etc.  One time, I made a list of all my clothes (this was back when I was in Maryland), and found it very depressing.  So much money down the tubes for things I rarely wore.  I still have too many clothes, but much less.

Hope everyone has a nice day!

Linda--That builder certainly knows how to work on the weekends when one might want to sleep a little later. I'm sure the cabinets will be fabulous when he is finished. I do hope you and DH have a good outing to church and then the gym.

I've lost my enthusiasm to do any more work. I get tired or bored easily doing this type of stuff. It is time fora can of Progresso Light soup followed by an episode of The Walking Dead and then Kindle time with Midnight. I have just a little over 24 hours to go on wearing the heart monitor.  I just sent an email request for a copy of the reports.

JEAN, It will be so nice when you are done with the heart monitor. I kind of enjoy doing odds & ends in the house. It makes me feel like I have really accomplished things one at a time. I don't do anything outdoors except hang the laundry which I enjoy doing & hot tub, So I enjoy being a little helpful inside. If that makes sense to anybody. I have only been to MOA once & that was back in Sept. 2005. One of our nephews got married at a beautiful state park in IA & we thought that since we spent all day getting there we would take a mini trip & go to the Corn Palace & then on to Mt. Rushmore. Well it was so cold that after seeing the Corn Palace DH asked me if I wanted to turn back & go to the MOA. The only store that I went into was the QVC Store. I still have the D. & CO moleskin jacket (pink & white subdued plaid). It was beautiful quality & still looks new. I still wear & get compliments all these years later. I used to love shopping, but now it is a real chore for me. I do enjoy window shopping though as we have several ladies shops on our square. they are pricey, but I like to see how they out outfits together. BIRD MAMA, You have made some really nice looking purchases. They should last you for a long time. Wear them in good health. I have never used the spread sheet method, but I know that it would keep spending in hand. The weather is great today. 70 & sunshine. No rain until later in the week & then low 80's. This is y type of weather & I love fall. LL, It sounds like you will be busy again today with church & then the gym. It will be so nice when your kitchen project is all done with. I am on the lookout for a grill for inside that I can plug into the kitchen outlet. Aldi's had just what I wanted but it is sold out with while supplies lasted. only. Mine was 28 y/o & died a while back. I don't want one with a lid so that is a little more tricky. The phone is ringing, so I'll be back with how DH's class reunion went.

Re: SHOPAHOLICS: ONE DAY AT A TIME (SUNDAY, SEPT. 13)

Hi girls! It's a sunny day, but cool; there's no temptation to lie on the pool float with a book, which is just as well - I have one more paper to write. I did an exam and some other writing last night, and the writing assignment was serendipitous - it covered some of the same topics that one of last week's classes did, so I already had everything I needed in my notes, so it took very little time. Cat Happy

I took the dogs for a drive last night; I wanted cookies, have eaten the ones from Trader Joe's, and didn't feel like baking, so I thought I'd go to Walmart and get some Carr's Ginger Cremes, one of my favorites.  They didn't have them, and other cookies are pretty much out as they're all made with HFCS, which I won't eat.  Guess I'll have to bake this week...

Jean, I can relate to being bored doing stuff like that.  I've made a resolution to spend an hour a day for the next week doing cleaning; as much as I hate it, it has to be done, and there are things I've neglected for far too long, like blinds and baseboards.  I found a YouTube channel called "Clean My Space" where a very pretty young lady offers cleaning tips on everything you can imagine.

I'm not in any kind of shopping mode at all; I don't need any clothing, as I have so much I've never used, and as for the house, well...I have everything I need, and have finally accepted my house isn't going to look like something out of magazine (which it did when I first bought it) with these critters.  Oh well...they're forever, and the house isn't....

LindaL, I sure wouldn't appreciate anyone coming that early!

Bird, have you decided to do with your "found money?"

I guess I'll have some lunch, then get down to work.  It's supposed to get back into the high 80s later this week, so hopefully I'll get a little more pool time in before I have to take it down and put it away.

Have a blessed day, everyone!

Re: SHOPAHOLICS: ONE DAY AT A TIME (SUNDAY, SEPT. 13)

The phone call was our DS. It is his birthday today & he thanked us for having him. It was a true pleasure to raise him & also our DD. He & his wife are at a seminar for him in MA & heading for their home. DH's class reunion was so much fun. We saw some classmates that we hadn't seen for 50 years. Friday night was fun at the popular bar. We ate across the street right in front of the court house where the local Lion's Club did a pork chop sandwich & brat cookout. Our friend was a delight to host. She & I enjoyed the hot tub on Friday & Saturday afternoons. She & I had a nice lunch on Saturday at Chopstick's. The Saturday night affair was at The Mansion. The meal was excellent with 188 people attending. There were around 240 in my DH's class with 31 deceased members. A nice program was put on after dinner with one of his classmates doing "Elvis," What a hoot that was. They also had a hula hoop contest. I remember when I was in the 5th grade, I was in a hula hoop contest & hula hooped for 8 hours nonstop. I tried to hula hoop a few years back & couldn't do it for 10 seconds. Our friend did visit the memorial bench that she had put at a park where her DH visited almost every day of his life after he started driving. Although they were apart for probably 15 years she still has fond memories of him & their two DC. Her eldest daughter lives in Grand Rapids MI. She is married to a pastor, has 3 DC & their eldest son is married & is going to seminary school in IA. He hopes to get back to GR after he graduates. Her younger DD lives in Neehah close to her mom. She is married to a school teacher, has 3 DC & is a computer specialist. So life is good for all of them now. I was really tired so after church services & lunch out I took a 3 hour much needed nap.

Re: SHOPAHOLICS: ONE DAY AT A TIME (SUNDAY, SEPT. 13)

Arlene--I like the way that cats thinks in that graphic. I think what one values has a lot to do with how much we "enjoy" housework. When there were others in the house, it was more motivating to keep it organized, decluttered, etc. I seem to get more tired quicker doing house work type stuff. One thing a day out of the house is 365 items gone in the year. That is easier than the non-stop once it is cleaned, it is start over again. There is no respite or relief from the work and few rewards associated with the house. I'm just not the Suzy Homemaker type who gets thrills out of a sparkling clean sink, etc.

Twinny--I think it is great when stores of similar products such as clothing are located close together. It eliminates the time and walking involved in getting from one to the other. Even in malls, it seems the better fashion stores are located apart which requires walking, etc. and if one is having issues with pain, etc., that does not make shopping a pleasure. I tire from it easily also which is another factor entering into my decreasing love of shopping in stores.

I'll be working tomorrow and Tuesday after all. I really enjoy working with the students and these two days will not be as challenging as some days. As a result, I should be able to get some things done in the evening instead of just resting.

Re: SHOPAHOLICS: ONE DAY AT A TIME (SUNDAY, SEPT. 13)

Jean - don't you have a necklace coming soon from the Italy show?

LindaL - your cabinets must nearly be done if your neighbor is adding the trim.  I hope you enjoyed the church service this morning and didn't overdo it at the gym.

Twinny - Denim & Co used to make nice moleskin pieces.  I'm not much of a window shopper in person.  I can window shop online, but wandering aimlessly through a mall without something specific in mind drives me nutcakes.  Take Friday night - I went to Carsons for the first time with the express purpose of returning the boots.  I was in and out and had no desire to see what the store was all about (lol).  Birthday greetings to your dear Son :-)   I'm so glad that you and DH enjoyed the reunion.

Arlene - It's good that your homework is moving right along.  Nothing worse than being pressured at the last minute to complete something.

I accommodate my pets in my home too.  I have a coffee table along one wall next to a recliner.  My DH used to watch TV in a recliner and it was his favorite old table that held his magazines and various electronics remotes.  Well, about a year into living with me, Grayson decided he liked being under that coffee table.  I call it his man cave.  I have a beach towel under the table and Grayson builts his nests there and keeps his toys there.  Yes, the pigeon has toys and yes I allow him in the yard and he likes to pick up the skinny twiggy things that fall off of the walnut tree.  I let him channel his inner bird and he will build a nest and sometimes sit in it.  I change the towel frequently because birds shed keratin when they preen their feathers - looks like flaky skin kind of.

Is the way I live for everyone - nope.  Am I going to change - nope.  I keep a clean house that accommodates free moving birds.

I have not decided what to do with my award.  I'm finding harder to spend this than money out of my paycheck - weird.
