Rehabbing an acrylic sweater?

I have an OLD acrylic sweater that I just love, but it has pilled badly over time. Short of sitting and pulling the pilling off, is there any quicker way to get rid of the pills? If I do "de-pill" it, is there any way to keep it from pilling again?
