It's a selling gimmick to sell more jackets.  Wearing that many layers of jackets is almost as silly as wearing rounds of heavy scarves around the neck in summer.  Oh wait!  some people do wear big neck scarves in summer.    Oops.

 

Layering is essential here -- in spring and fall, it can be 40 degrees in the morning and 80 in the afternoon.  I might wear a cotton t-shirt or skinny-t with a shirt over it, and a jean jacket over that -- then peel layers as the temperatures warm.
