I just bought a dress from Chico's - V front and back. The back has a thin strip of material across the top of the V. In looking at their website I noticed other V backs - on tops - that have this same piece of material. I've never seen this before. What's it for? To keep the V straight?

If it's the same material as the dress, most likely it's to keep the dress up on your shoulders. Without it the dress may fall away a little on one side or the other, showing bra straps. They incorporate the thin strip into the design of the dress.

There's another meaning for V-back so you really got my curiosity going! LOL
To answer your question I think it's strictly for visual appeal.

Don't cut it out...lol It's part of the dress design but it's also functional. It keeps the dress up on your shoulders.
