Do you remember when nurses wore nothing but white uniforms?  Can you imagine the amount of care those uniforms needed when your job consisted of dealing with blood, vomit, and heaven knows what else all day?  Now they wear easily launderable scrubs.  And the starched white hat is nowhere to be seen.

I do remember and I know the uniform was a definite symbol of their status, but as long as todays' nurses are well versed in their disciplne and care well for their patients, the only thing I care about what they wear is that it's clean.

My last encounter with working nurses would have been last August -  hold a gun to my head and I still couldn't tell you what any one of them was wearing.

Sure do, my sister's a nurse and don't forget the white stockings and white shoes too!

She always carried her starched white hat in a hat box until she got to work, to keep it pristine, with no possible rain drops.

@depglass yes I remember...as a little girl I wanted to be a nurse because I wanted to wear a nurse's cap!  They wore white stockings, white shoes that they polished with white shoes polish and I remembered one nurse that wore a blue cape.  Their uniforms would make a swishing sound when they walked.  Even after nurse's dressed more casual she said she worked hard and wore the whole white uniform look.  Now nurse's get pins not caps.  My daughter is a RN it's scrubs all the way.  She is in the OR so I guess it would be scrubs.

They make really cute surgical caps now, I bought a couple just to wear around the house to hold my hair back. One has muscle cars all over and the other one is navy with tiny green martians.

Change for the better, now hopefully their intelligence and job performance matters far more than what they wear. I remember reading a post here once that nurses should go back to wearing those outfits.

They still get their nurse's cap when the graduate from nursing school.

When I was a teenager, I was a candy Striper at a local hospital. We had candy striped pinafores with a white button down shirt. Our caps had to be starched, and I thought I was all that. Now the junior volunteers wear khakis and polo shirts, and it's a lot more practical.

As a retired nurse and nurse practitioner, I miss the white uniforms. For one thing, patients knew you were a nurse, but most importantly, white shows dirt. Colored and print scrubs can be worn for days without washing. Yuk, just yuk.
