I had a rear molar filled yesterday and last night developed a hematoma on my jawline--no where near the filling. It worsened today and my dentist told me it's because of the novacaine injection. This has never happened to me before. Has anyone else had this experience?

I've never experienced it myself, giving or receiving an injection, but yep, it happens.

I have never had it happen and I have had a lot of novacaine injections over the years.

Yes, it happened to me in my 20's which was years ago. His reaction when I went back a day or two later to show him was "oh, did I do that?" I no longer have that dentist. I attributed it to his lack of skill for giving injections.

People actually ask that?

I don't blame the dentist. I have talked to several dentists after it happened to me and if they nick a blood vessel in your mouth, it can give you a hematoma. Most every dentist has had it happen. On 4/10/2014 jcarmstrong said: I stayed in most of the time. I got tired of people asking me if my husband hit me!People actually ask that?

That's been my experience--no problems ever before. This dentist we've had for awhile and he has family issues going on right now--his daughter (mother of two young children) is battling stage 4 breast cancer. He lived in our neighborhood and I know his wife and my kids grew up with his kids--lovely family. I just wonder if he's understandably distracted and worried and that's impacting his skills.
The bruising is bad and worsens everyday. I can barely cover it with makeup. I'm just glad I don't have any big client meetings right now! I'm swollen, too.

If it hasn't been suggested GraceCo, try using ice packs around the affected area with a dish rag over the ice pack (to avoid freezer burn) Put the pack on for 20 minutes and off for 20 minutes while awake. This is ease the swelling and hopefully lessen the bruising.

I've had it happen a couple of times when getting blood drawn for a test, these things happen. I felt bad for the lab tech.
You might have moved, etc. Dentists are human also.
