@Lala Ann wrote:I live in Central NJ, and I shop at the Nordstrom Rack. I love that store. They have a huge selection of clothes, shoes, jewelry, cosmetics, things for the home, and much more. I love it. My husband always gets great buys on shoes there.
We have a Nordstom Rack and I can never find anything that I like at it. I've bought perhaps 2 items there, and I've been in there 8 or 10 times.

also, the problem at macy's is not even in the same ballpark imo. they don't have the customer service, their stores are a mess and their merchandise is not the same you pay high prices, most times for shipping, too.
Our Macy's is nice, but the INC department has gone downhill bigtime. I have only bought jeans there recently. I do like Macy's, but I hate paying the shipping if one doesn't buy at least $99 of merchandise. I like the shoe department, but even then...I haven't found many pairs lately I've liked.
I NEED to be on a "no shopping" moratorium--lol--good for you!!!

I'm going to check out Nordstrom's Rack, next time I drive by, in that area, if it's still there. 'Just to see' what's happening over there. Haven't been there in years and years, it seems.

For me, it is the decline in quality everywhere. Today, I threw out 4 tops that I just love and they are not that old, but, they stretched out. I am so disappointed and I know I have more that needs to go. I refuse to spend on thin materials anymore that barely lasts a season. I can understand if it is summer wear but even then it is too paper thin. So, needless to say I haven't bought much in clothing this year and I do need to spruce up my wardrobe some.
I havent been to The Rack lately, I will need to swing by there. I don't really find anything but it doesn't hurt to look.

My Macy's is beautiful and well-stocked and busy! I love Macy's merchandise way more than Nordstrom's. Nordstrom carries a lot of those brands that are supposed to be misses sizes but actually fit like Juniors. If you don't want to pay for shipping at Macy's, wait a few days and there will be a special sale where the shipping amount is lower (like buy $25 or $50 and get free shipping). I buy both in their store (my preferred way) and online if I can't get the item in the store. I don't want any of these stores to go under. We need them all. If I lived in a world with only online shopping, I would go into a deep depression and in the end, it won't work for many women. Buying an occasional article of clothing or shoes is different than having to buy everything online and deal with returns. Our economy is very bad right now. The government is printing money with no backing and there are no jobs other than low level. The stats only look the way they want them to look. A person who once owned a small business or had a good job that could support his/her family, may have gotten another job - only it's in fast food or something that won't support them.

Agree!

I really don't think most people want to buy their clothing and shoes online. I think this is about the economy right now. Yes, I buy some clothing online, but really not a lot. I couldn't afford all the returns. I look for quality and it's pretty difficult to see that from a few pictures online. There is nothing like seeing the fabric and trying it on (even if you take it home to try on, you can still return it easily enough). The people I see shopping online the most are people who don't live near cities with stores, or people who can't get special sizes.

@Deanie wrote:Oh, and, I agree with you regarding how people dress . If one travels to place outside the US, you see everyone looking very smart. If I am not mistaken, other countries spend less on the quantity of their clothes but more on the quality.
Really? EVERYONE???

People don't have the discretionary income they used to have. People also shop online for the best deals. Maybe in the U.S. Nordstrom has free shipping but that doesn't extend to Canada. If Nordstrom is expecting millenials to bail them out well they don't have a lot of cash and they are buying experiences rather than clothes. My daughter is a perfect example, she's saving to go to Australia, she hasn't bought many new clothes this year.
I fully expect Nordstrom to leave Canada as they are losing a lot of money here. When the U.S. stores did well, they could afford to lose money in Canada. But Canadians are in a pinch too as the cost of essentials like food and housing has increased that they don't have the extra cash either. Due to the low CDN dollar clothing prices have skyrocketed 30 or 40 percent or more in the past year.

The Macy's in Louisville is very nice. We go there 3 or 4 times a year. Macy's doesn't offer free shipping at $25 or $50 often. That is only a few times a year. It's almost always free shipping at $99.
I do like to go, feel and touch the merchandise too.
