Neiman Marcus' Plummeting Sales

[ Edited ]

In their most recent fiscal quarter ending Oct. 29, NM's sales have plummeted 8% compared to the same 3-month period last year. By comparison, Saks and Nordstrom sales have declined 4% and 4.5% respectively for that same period.

Here's the link to a brief article:

Re: Neiman Marcus' Plummeting Sales

Elite stores are not immune from dipping sales.  Many customers who want the designers and brands sold by these merchants are more likely than at any other time in history to try to find it at a discount somewhere.  Searching online frequently makes this possible.  The elite stores have also made their own outlets quite accessible for many regions of the country.  Sure, a lot of their outlet merchandise is purchased for the distinct purpose of stocking those stores, and never saw a day in their regular priced store, but a fair share of merchandise does trickles into Last Call, The Rack, Off Fifth from their main parent stores.

The store near me is empty most of the time and like a Ghost Town. The restaurant is always crowded but the sales floor, the employees always look nervous looking for some activity. The makeup area is one I will avoid in the future.....very hard sell.

For bargin hunters check out their sales. there are 2 main areas: Last Call and then just NM Sale. I have posted many times that Oryany bags are always sale priced at NM. I think they have certain designers and brands that are their sale bait. M Kors is another brand with deep discounts.

Re: Neiman Marcus' Plummeting Sales

I rarely shop at NM due to the snotty attitude held by their own salespeople. Cosmetics and fragrance departments are a hard sell with even more attitude. Their customer service stinks. The USED to be elite as well as Bergdorf, Barny's and Saks but NORDSTROM carries just about every brand they carry plus with a smile and excellent customer service. So ask yourself: same merchandise but one place treats you like ******- the other like a Queen. Hmm....where shall a I shop? Hmm.....

IF they and BG go under, you'll still have Nordstrom, Saks and Barneys for high end with Macy, Lord & Taylor, Dillards, etc for middle and then everyone else for daily needs. Not to mention all the niche online stores as well as the vendors own online sites.

@SahmIam: I agree about the snooty attitudes of the salespeople at NM. I find this to be true at Saks as well. I don't want to feel that l'm being judged by my outfit and accessories every time l walk into those stores, lol.

Saks is an uncomfortable shopping experience IMO.  Something about that store, and never anyone interested in helping a customer.

Re: Neiman Marcus' Plummeting Sales

No doubt that retailers including luxury ones would rather forget 2016. The year has been bad for all of them as people stop spending and look elsewhere. I was in Las Vegas 3 times this past year and saw for myself how empty those luxury stores and department stores were. Nobody was in any luxury store in January, it was like a ghost town. The tourists weren't in those stores. In winter I walked through NM to get to the rest of the Fashion Show Mall and it was empty. Nordstrom was also empty.

Even May and October when I was there were hardly better. In early October when it was 90 degrees outside, NM had a section of the store decorated like Christmas. All the stores were selling fall clothes, it was bizarre since you couldn't possibly wear any of that stuff in Las Vegas at that time of the year because it was too hot!

Don't like and never shop any of those 3 stores so wouldn't matter to me if they go under.

Re: Neiman Marcus' Plummeting Sales

Interesting that in reading this thread, no one has mentioned in any of the comparisons Bloomingdales.  What's the deal with that store?

I don't have Bloomies, Barneys or Neiman Marcus in my area.  The nearest Saks and Nordies are about 50 minutes away so they aren't stores I go to on a regular basis.  I do agree with the person who said Saks is an uncomfortable shopping experience.
