I ordered this dress in the Lord and Taylor sale Monday and received it today. It was 35 dollars originally about 120. Tahari. For a polyester dress insane original price to me but it's the name.
I was getting it just for a lbd, but also thought frankly it could be for funerals. I had to go to a wake a couple of months ago and had no solid black dresses other than a maxi. It's a heavier weight fabric and has subtle sparkle at the waist that I covered with a sweater.
This dress in person has more skin showing through, wider portion of lace than I thought from the picture. All my instincts make me think it looks "cocktail", not funeral. That people would say can you beIieve she wore that. A woman at the wake I attended wore a short red dress. Wake and funeral, I would never want to look inappropriate.
It's modest length wise, no slit in the back and about at the knees. I have to try it on with a shaper, it was much too hot today to do that. But if it's not ok for a funeral or wake I think I will return it. I just wanted to have something in my closet and not have to search when the time comes. Most lbds are sleeveless and very short. I haven't been able to find anything with short sleeves and modest length and neckline, that is also a bargain. Doesn't the lace automatically make it the s ends in y? I should have realized that....that's a definite NO for a funeral, obviously I know that. I think it's a little too body con. It's not tight, but not loose either.
Plus this has the bra issue, it would have to be strapless.

It is a beautiful dress. If you wore a cardigan over, the lace would not show. If you wore a s skinny tee or t shirt style shaper, the lace may be more subtle and textural. Or a scarf that covers the lace for funerals.
It is a versatile dress. Lace is totally appropriate for daytime these days. Patent or leather pumps would be less dressy than strappy sandals. Pearls would be less evening than diamond type stones.

I love it...Tahari has always been a favorite...unbelievable price! I agree with @jewel3 that I would only wear it with a scarf or sweater for a funeral. If you can make that work, it's a keeper. Plus, you never know when you'll be able to wear it for something else (a date with Jon Hamm woohoo lol)!!

It would be a NO for me..........I have broad shoulders

It is such a pretty dress and I agree it is hard to find a simple lbd you can wear to a funeral.
I would keep it if as others suggested you could wear a scarf or sweater if you can, if going to a funeral.
I guess I would not keep it for myself because you would have to wear a strapless bra. Also I wouldn't want to have to cover it up if too hot.
For me, I wouldn't want to wonder or feel uncomfortable if I wasn't sure about it.
But if you can live with covering parts and wearing a strapless bra, it sure is pretty and you could wear it to many other things! Plus such a good price!

I see women wearing subdued dark dresses to funerals but they don't dress in black like crows. I think that's kind of passe. I don't own and don't intend to buy a black dress. Heck, I don't even own a dress. Am I wrong?

Gorgeous dress! Just gorgeous! I hope you decide to keep it. And as an ex-sewer most of my life, (buying fabric out there) the polyesters are varied and some cost a fortune....
I wanted a poly crepe once and the price was $37 a yard! That was a while ago too.... and it takes approximately 3 yards (maybe 2 1/2 if it's short depending if you get the 45 size or the 60 size bolt).... but basically that's why I stopped sewing, once you buy the fabric you like, buy notions, a zipper, fabric tape, etc you've got an expensive garment ....
You got a great deal~!

The neckline is very pretty. I think of lace as being feminine. I think the dress is apprioiate for a funeral and I would wear a opaque black tight and black flats.

@Greeneyedlady21, Pretty dress. I would wear a black cardigan over it to a funeral.

@MacDUFF I know I sound so clueless, but thankfully I haven't been to that many funerals. When I have I just put something together from my closet that's appropriate. I think I'll keep an eye out for something else, and maybe keep this anyway (if it looks bad without the shaper then no). Even though I hardly ever go out anywhere. All my instincts told me no for wakes and funerals when I put it on.
I just wish labels would think of modest appropriate black dresses.
