    I passed on the  Cougar as they did not concentrate on the  soles of the boot.

 Where I live we often get horrendous ice in the winter . I have found that I have to scrutinize the sole of the boots . The soft non slip lug ones such as the  Alegeria that I bought in black  passed the test. I have a pair of boots that are  waterproof for deeper snow  but bought these for treading ice

@Desert Lily    HSN featured a Sporto boot yesterday.  They were the first I've seen this year.  I've always though they were so nice looking and practical, plus they're taller in case you have to slough through deeper snow.  Some boots are too short and who wants snow in their boot?

You need to check the shoe section @Desert Lily .  There are a lot of sites that you can get good reviews from for the kinds of boots you're looking for.  

You didn't mention a price point, so I think Zappos or Nordstrom is a good idea for checking for good boots.  These sites will tick each box.

@Desert Lily  - As you know, with the Q, you can wear the boots and if they don't work out, you can still return them.  I don't know if the other places have a liberal return policy.

@Desert Lily @San Antonio Gal Nordstrom's (my favorite store in the world) has an excellent return policy.  No real time limit.  No count down.....

Zappos has a 365 day return policy ...so good luck if you go those routes.  Zappos will also let you return a pair that doesn't fit or something until you've decided before they bill you.  One of the best places on the web to buy shoes from is Zappos.
