I admire every single person that isn't thin that wears the leggings!
I want to go up to each one & tell them they look Great!
How wonderful that they are comfortable with their bodies & confident in themselves as human beings to put on what is soft & easy to wear & go live their lives!!
Not in every situation. But if they are just out shopping or walking on the boardwalk, you do it!!
Not everyone that works out & keeps themselves healthy get a lean, thin body.
A lot of people are healthy but have different type bodies & maybe they just came from working out & have on their workout clothes.
Maybe they are just comfortable wearing the leggings.
I admire that.
I get tired of feeling ashamed of myself because someone may be looking at me & judging me for my body, or how I dress, or how my hair is grey.

I don't see women wearing leggings anymore where I live.

Well, leggings are MY pants. I work very hard for my body and always have. I have never been overweight, have worked out and run my whole life since high school and never stopped. At 68, I am thin and trim. I life weights (not soup cans) and am fortunate to be in very good health, following good food choices and workout routines. My primary care doctor tells me I am not physically my age, coming in at maybe 10 years younger. I appreciate knowing that. I continue to enjoy good muscle tone, but yes, I do notice age related body changes but for me, they are subtle and I know I must embrace it.
As far as the pants, what I do choose to spend my hard earned cash on is my "workout/work" wear. My leggings typically cost 50 to 90$ because I strive for a good fit. Good fit in the rear, proper fit in the front. I choose dark colors so I can wear them to work and save the fun designs for the weekends. They are appropriate to me, with a good blouse/shirt and flats or boots. Yes I agree, I have seen what I perceive as "girl you should have checked in your mirror."
My 43 years old daughter's running buddy is 73. I can't run with either one of them because they run at a faster pace. At 73, she is trim and also not looking her age. She looks great in clothes and dresses appropriately, but youthful.
If someone is comfortable in their body no matter the size/shape or age, good for them. I would not be comfortable being overweight so I employ a lifestyle that affords a good body where I can wear my leggings.

I don't see women wearing leggings for street wear in my conservative New England town. Maybe I don't get out enough, but I want to avoid eye pollution. I guess some might call me hopelessly old-fashioned, but dressing like a lady means respecting yourself as a woman. Sad that modesty is out of fashion with some folks. I am referring to leggings that are not covered by lunic tops, of course.
