Forget the celebrities posing. It's some of the ordinary folks who come up with the best get-ups for Derby Day. You can tell a lot of thought goes into those outfits whether you like or not.

I agree, Trix. This is one of my favorites. . .you can tell they put some thought into these hats and they look like they're having a great time.

{#emotions_dlg.thumbup}That couple with their hats made of roses is a perfect example of what I meant.

I hate the trend of fascinators at weddings and the Derby. Fascinators are cocktail hats at best.

The fashion tradition of wearing hats at wedding parties*, garden parties and outings like the Kentucky Derby arose from the need of women to keep the sun off their faces. Little millinery frills attached to the side of the head are pointless in these circumstances and just look ridiculous and gauche.

* Not referring to the requirement of some churches that women's heads be covered; I mean traditional daytime weddings followed by a breakfast or luncheon at which women would wear wide-brimmed hats.
