Re: Joan Rivers skirt, wedding styling question

Although a definite classic ,   I would not wear the black watch plaid skirt  on a Memorial day weekend .

If you had the same Joan Rivers  skirt in the Teak  brown plaid or Griffen grey color  which both have a nice bright pink, than  maybe they would work . Otherwise, I'd pick something else  such as the Joan Rivers floral taffeta skirt

Woman LOL Excellent point. Thing is I live near Canada. Average temp in the evening on Memorial Day weekend is 50F or less. So a bit of extra warmth in the evening is appreciated. I am considering carrying along a wool blazer.

That was my thought. That a black watch plaid skirt would look too funereal and out of season. I pulled my skirt out of the closet and my skirt has tiny pinstrip-style white and yellow stripes running through the watch plaid. Still, it looks funereal and out of season.

I looked up what "formal" means for wedding attire. For men it means a black jacket, black pants, dark tie and white shirt. By that logic wouldn't a dark skirt and white blouse be logical for women? Dunno. That's why I appreciate all these comments. I'm clueless.

I do have a long yellow tropical-print silk skirt I've worn to every wedding for like the past 20 years. I kid not. I thought maybe it was time for something different.

@AuntMame - I think your skirt is beautiful. But I wouldn't wear black. To me it seems more holiday like. BUT - that's a beautiful shade of blue in the plaid. I think you could pick up that color.

There's a pretty satin blouse by Lawrence Zarian (A630690) that some of the hosts had on yesterday (Beauty Day) that you might want to take a look at. It IS Memorial Day, so I think blue would look really pretty and appropriate!  Smiley Happy

Pull the blue for the blouse..it will lighten the plaid up, look pretty & appropriate. Have fun.

Re: Joan Rivers skirt, wedding styling question

What to Wear to a Spring Wedding:

  • Colors: pastels (light pinks, blues, greens), neutrals (black, blush, beige, mauve)

  • Fabrics: linen, cotton, silk, or seersucker

  • Patterns: gingham, madras plaid, florals, paisley, pinstripes, or polka dots

The formality of the event will heavily influence what you wear, but the season can influence the shade and material of your outfit choice. Spring weddings are all about embracing nature’s renewal, so mirror the season’s soft, light colors and pretty blossoms through your choice of pastel, floral, and breezy attire.

That Zarian blouse is gorgeous! Especially in that blue. Sadly, the blue is sold out except for 5X.

The plaid in my Joan skirt doesn't have any blue. The plaid is mostly black with dark forest green, and then the vertical white and yellow pinstripes. When I posted the original message I thought it was classic black watch plaid, but when I pulled it out of my closet I saw it had the pinstripes and lacked blue. Still very close to watch plaid. I thought about matching the yellow to a blouse but that still doesn't seem like it would look in the spring spirit. Too acid.

I do love this Joan skirt and have been wearing it for the holidays for years. It's very versatile. There are many things one can wear with it that will look good. Thought that maybe, since it's dark in color, I could make it work for a wedding, but probably not.

Thank you, @elated , this is very helpful. I guess it's time once again to pull out the old silk pastel floral skirt. A perfectly lovely skirt, but my Joan skirts have everything beat for comfort.

@AuntMame  I don't know what size you wear but I found this dress with a jacket that is very pretty.  It is in petite.
