Yes @lgfan  I wonder soon if they will even have that?  The thumbs will get longer in the DNA because of the telephone device as they need to do so. Eyes will get bigger to view the phones.

Oh I'm becoming part of it but am limited as one needs to keep up or you are sunk.

Well, our beloved books  reading under the covers on a rainy day or before bedtime will be a thing of the past. A library? what?  Huh?

Yes, the robots are here indeed sadly.

Re: It's GAUDY not GAWDY

If you Google it it says this: Gaudy and gawdy are different spellings of the same word. Gaudy is recommended by most dictionaries and usage guides, but gawdy is listed as an accepted variant. In either spelling, the word means (1) showy in a tasteless or vulgar way; or it refers to (2) a festival or raucous party, or (3) a showy ornament.

As my linguistics professor told us many years ago (particularly aimed at those who love to correct others) - Language evolves - Get over it.

And what should we call it when certain posters prefer to chastise us for posting our comments?

Rudeness?

I think it's "by and large," but hey maybe that's evolved too.  Just haven't seen it much.

@santorini

Thank you.  So many times I wish to make corrections to these and others and then I look back and I have made a mistake by omitting a letter because I didn't strike the key hard enough and kept on going as I didn't see it.  So, I just decided to "let it slide."  You made my day by doing this. I don't want to be called the English teacher any longer.

Yes, it is way too easy to mistype something - which is why I like to give folks the benefit of the doubt for those errors.

As to pronunciation, I remember also being told - When someone mispronounces something, it may be because they learned the word by reading not hearing.  That always gives me pause as well.

It's also the result of having been a teacher.  Seeing the same misspelling over and over makes my eyeballs hurt!  But in my defense, I only picked on one word, not "every grammatical error."  Carry on.

ETA

Also, this was a generalized statement, not directed at a particular poster.  I think that would be rude.

Amen.  @KingstonMom

I am happy someone else brought it up.  We all make mistakes but some are just not caring enough to know.  One person here posts such nonsensical language, most of the time I cannot figure out what is being discussed or if she is seeing it in the negative or the positive.

And it's should HAVE and not should OF.

Yes, but should've is generally pronounced should of - so if it's written should of, it's wrong, but not if it's spoken.  And of course there's always shoulda - which is another evolution that many hate.

I seriously doubt they teach reading and writing in college.  These skills should be taught at the elementary level. By high school, you should be proficient in these skills.

Just this morning I read an article that used the spelling "see" in place of "sea."

I would think that if you have a job writing articles for a living, you would know better, but I suppose not.

When I went to school, it a word was spelled incorrectly, the paper was returned and I was made to correct it.  I carried a small paperback book that had English words listed with the correct spelling in it....not a dictionary.

I noticed today, speeling is not a big issue in school.  I suppose everyone could use spell check, but even then some skill is needed to know which spelling to use for words like Capital and Capitol, you're and your and the like.  They are spelled correctly, but have different meanings.
