It's time to reevaluate my jacket purchases especially in those winter fabrics that I now wear during late fall months and that are too heavy looking for spring. It depends on the coat, the blazer and the wearer. I can relate to the "stuffed" Michelin Man feeling. I do wear my blazers and thick sweaters under my coats and I usually feel like I'm waddling. But when it's 11 degrees outside....I do not care. I'm gonna be warm. Sometimes, I'll carry my blazer to work with me and slip it on after I take my coat off. Sometimes I do carry my blazer on my arm and slip it on after I take my coat off. As for the idea that coats are cut to fit blazers etc...maybe....in 1989. Everything today is designed to fit closer to the body, the big swing coats of yester year don't exist outside of thrift shops. Going up a size in the coat doesn't help because when you aren't wearing a blazer, the coat is too big. It takes me an hour to get to work, for the sake of feeling warm, I'll accept feeling a little "stuffed".

My daughter who has graduated from a zero to a 4 now wore her (maybe a little tight but who noticed) size 2's in StJ suited jackets with her leggings and boots under her EF down coat when we were in NYC for the holidays and she looked tall, thin and red carpet ready. I am so happy she is tall and thin like her paternal side.
When going out in the evenings to theater or dinner, she braved it in her grandmother's (my mother) mink jackets, revamped. With faux fur so real looking nowadays, I think it went unnoticed. I wore a Dennis Basso faux fur which is (thankfully) nowhere near the warmth of a real fur (given the excess calories I have nowadays, far from the diminutive size I once was) I was quite warm.

I dislike wearing a heavy winter coat, especially driving. Too bulky. Unless I am going to be outside for more than a few minutes, my coat stays in the back of my vehicle.

Debbie, I do. I have this marvelous, generously cut swing-line coat that has ample sleeves that I wear over a blazer on the coldest days. Most people think this burgundy coat with black lining is far more expensive than it is, too. It is a faux suede and faux fur lined coat by Utex Design. I bought it about 11 years ago at Burlington Coat Factory for about $150. The list price was about $325 or so. Just checked online to see if I could find similar but to no avail. However, I was stunned to see how low prices are for this brand of coat. Maybe their stock fell?

Yes- I would rather look like a Brrrrrito than an en-chill-ada!

That might be the answer, Debbie. A swing coat is so classic. Only if you want a certain look would it be avoided, in my opinion. At the same time I bought this coat, I bought another one that is more fitted. So, it wasn't as though Burlington was giving its customers the dregs. The truth is, though, I haven't seen attractive coats there in the last several years. I pop in every now and again when I visit my ophthalmologist, and there is nothing. A friend of mine shops at a different Burlington location from mine, and she swears they have gorgeous coats. Me, I haven't seen them for a long time, as I said.

lola, this is very close. The burgundy and seaming are correct, but the "fur" lining is solid black and smooth. It is a mid-calf coat, too. Is this one? Where did you find this? Also, this looks a little stiffer than mine. My coat was always "giving."
