Re: I have a much simpler question

A few years ago I was asked to do a Dorothy Parker reading to a local theater group.  I did not have a "real" 1920s flapper look so I improvised.  I wore a black maximum length tiered skirt of poly with an overlay of chiffon, a sleeveless silk tank top, long strands of pearls, some bold earrings in black, pearl and rhinestones (it was the one about the garter, so of course, I had to pull my skirt up to show the garter). A British friend who had lots of flapper stuff told me she would bring a garter but it was too late for me to borrow other items. She brought the cigarette holder and the garter for me.  It turned out fine. I have the haircut so I'm okay with that.

Re: I have a much simpler question

I think I have the perfect dress that I forgot I had.  Shopping in my closet.  It'a a black sheath dress, just about the flapper length. It has a chiffon-like overlay.  It is something I bought to wear to a luncheon several years ago and only wore once, didn't like the fact it was chiffon and felt I could not wear it "just anywhere."  I have a very sequined scarf (shawl) with lots of sequins from Joan Rivers because it is like to be cool.  I like the red accents in this.  I will either buy, separate, or borrow my friend's cigarette holder.  I love this!  I love that dress I found in my closet (of things I was considering giving away) and that beautiful Joan Rivers sequin scarf/shawl of same chiffon-like fabric.

I think it's always better to put these things together with items you already have than to buy a bunch of junk to achieve the look.

Re: I have a much simpler question

This has been fun and I thank you all for sharing your ideas.  It gives me several things to think on and different ways to look at it.  Interestingly, I have been to the Gatsby Museum, the home of Zelda and Scott.  So interesting and I love Dorothy Parker's wit and wisdom. I think I could have enjoyed living then and knowing that Round Table group.
