Exactly the same with my Mom!! It took a lot of convincing to get her to wear pants, and then that's all she wore.

@maximillian My mom worked as a secretary so she dressed up most days. When she retired....it was all slacks. My grandmothers, on the other hand, would garden and pull weeds in the yard with a dress on. I never saw either of them in anything other than a dress.

yes, my mother did wear them. i don't ever remember her in long pants, but i have a faded memory of her on her hands and knees out in the garden in something like a pedal pusher and a sleeveless top. my mom passed away at age 57 in 1970, and i think pants for women were just coming into style. wasn't it about then that ladies were starting to be 'allowed' to wear pants at work? i remember how really 'special' it felt when i first wore pants to work!
today we have what we call a patio dress or a lounge dress, which is sort of like what we used to call a mu-mu ... and i think of those as the modern day equivalent to the house dress. they are wonderful in the summer when it is hotter than you know what and you can't stand to have anything on. and it's that hot here a LOT. i would never go out in one of those (although some ladies do) but i wear them in the house ( "housedress" LOL) all the time.

Back in the 50's-60's, my mom worked in an office and dressed up for that. Weekend evenings, she and Dad went out dancing and she wore fancy cocktail dresses. She was quite a fashionista.
But when she was home, she had on a house dress or snap-up "duster." Always. She never wore a pair of jeans in her life, and never wore any type of pants around the house.

My grandmother lived with us when I was a kid, I remember she wore them. Don't remember my Mom wearing them. My Mom worked outside the home before that was a very common thing.

I grew up in the 60's and we moved to Arizona in 1959. I was to young to remember what my mom wore when we lived in Ohio but I do know that once she moved to Arizona I never saw her in a dress ever. I only saw her in a dress once and that was at my dad's funeral in 1967. I think she got rid of that dress right after that as I never saw her in a dress ever again.

My Mom was a "fashion plate" or thought she was. I remember her wearing a Roper-type caftan to make us breakfast before school. On days we stayed home or summer, she quickly dressed for the day in her ensemble which was never a house dress. She was always in full makeup, an outfit and costume jewelry even if staying home.
DH's Mom, who was the same age as my Grandma when I came into his family in 1969, wore house dresses until she straightened up around the house after breakfast, took her shower and then dressed for the day...I think she wore slacks.

My Mom almost always wore dresses. She rarely wore pants. And she only started wearing pants when she was in her 70's.
