Re: Formal attire requested for wedding guests

[ Edited ]

@Wobin

@@I know I would not wear black VELVET to an afternoon, outdoor, daylight spring wedding. Black color is ok for me anytime.   Formal in the description to me, says not "cocktail' short and not "casual", but perhaps tea-length or at the knee and structured fabrics (google 'formal fabric' to get a list and descriptions, as its more than silk etc.

You say you dont want to to buy another dress so perhaps consider something else you already own besides black VELVET.

You might even consider renting one via the internet.  I knew a young lady who does this ALL the time, not to get a fancy over the top dress either but for the same reason, not to have to buy a one-and-done. She is more than average height etc so its nice to know these rental companies accomadate a wide variety of sizes.

Id ask the l bride ( or whoever is inviting you) for an idea of what they are looking for. It can be that simple .

Let us know, I get so curious lol

Re: Formal attire requested for wedding guests

@foxywoods Beautiful dress!  I bet half of the women wore black.

Black velvet is fine as long as it isnt too formal thick, stiff and Holiday feeling. All eyes will be on the Bride!

Also having seen what people wear in coastal Washington stat, it seems the west coast is a bit less fussy with appropriate dress.

I attended a Spring Wedding last year in Florida with Black Tie Optional  dress code.

and wore this exact dress which is partially velvet. Many guests wore loud low-cut gowns and many wore black.

I added a semi-sheer chiffon topper  ordered from Amazon. There are so many toppers shrugs and shawls you can find there!  I opted against a pashmina or shawl because that would have necissited adjusting and clutching to keep it from sliding off.

I posted a similar question last Spring and you can see the dress and discussion here.

@Wobin I like your idea wearing the pashmina. What are some of the others attending wearing?

I've only seen a picture of what the grandmother of the bride will be wearing and it is a floor length navy blue dress with a lace jacket.  Gran is my sister and we'll be attending together so I didn't want to wear a navy blue dress I have which is actually a business dress with a Chanel style jacket.

Formal afternoon wedding attire?

For Women
  • Dresses: Midi or knee-length cocktail dresses are ideal, though long flowy dresses or maxi dresses are also appropriate.
  • Colors/Styles: Lighter colors, bright hues, or subtle patterns are suitable for daytime. Consider crepe flutter sleeve dresses, wrap dresses, or elegant halter necks.
  • Fabrics:
     Silk, chiffon, or satin are good choices.

@Zhills Though it starts at 4pm, I'm sure it ends around 10 or 11 pm with most of the reception and dancing in the evening.

Yes it is.  What is the source so I can look for this?

Wear what you have described...    Sounds fine to me.

Thanks.  I wondered if they asked for formal attire so guests won't show up in jeans.  Smiley LOL  I have a real cute spring dress with a dark denim jacket . .

@Wobin

OMG, no!   Woman Surprised

Denim anything is NOT considered formal attire.

If you cannot dress appropriately for the event, send them a nice card and gift, and stay home.

I was also going to say that I though velvet was more of a winter fabric.  But pretty much anything goes anywhere any time these days.  Pashminas are just a type of wrap - always in style.

@FranandZoe

Um, no, not really.

If the event is specifically noted as formal attire, then that's what you should wear.   Or, stay home.  Don't embarrass yourself.

I wouldn't attend a wedding where what I wore would ruin the bride's life lol. But I attend only weddings where the bride or groom or parents love me and want me to be there.

I wear what I want. Let the photographer photoshop me out of photos that would put the bride in hysterics.

I think the black velvet sounds lovely. Enjoy yourself!

ETA:  Black is a four season color.
