I have one faux jacket and about nine or ten real ones. I can't tell much difference in the way they feel on or off. The faux does have the advantage of being washable which is huge to me.
The price of leather has escalated so much that a nice leather jacket is beyond the reach of many people. There are also ethical objections by many. Both of these factors make leather unpopular.

I love fashion. I like a modern look. I love leather but it is too expensive and too hard to care for and I have a huge wardrobe, it wouldn't be worth it to spend money on real leather that I'd only wear a handful of times during the season. I bought a Dg2 black faux leather moto style jacket from HSN last summer on clearance. A month ago I bought black faux leather pants and brown faux suede pants from QVC on clearance. Deep clearance. I'm going to have fun creating outfits with those items. I'm amazed at how real today's faux or vegan leathers look. If you don't like faux leather, I promise I won't show up at your house and force you to wear it.

@Foxxee wrote:Yes, some of the high end designers are making some very nice coats and jackets. Stella McCartney comes to mind. She had a gorgeous alligator embossed trench coat last year that looked very real. $2,000.
Faux leather is a good alternative for those who like the look of leather, but won't wear it due to price or concern for animal welfare.
As with leather handbags, shoes, and jackets, real leather eventually does begin to look worn. I have no idea how today's faux leather will wear over time.
There are advantages to faux leather. Real leather needs professional cleaning, lighter colors show dirt very quickly, stains are difficult to remove, it sometimes stretches out of shape, not good in the rain, shrinks, and becomes hard after drying, and it can dry out and become hard in low humidity. I don't like to spray protectants on high quality leather.
I only wear real leather, but won't say I would never wear a faux leather jacket that looks and feels like leather. Will not wear a faux leather handbag or shoes, though.
There are no advantages to faux leather in my opinion. It is made from petro chemicals. Real leather is tanned and a natural, breathable resource that will not affect the earth upon breakdown. So, while many people believe they helping the animal population are in fact adding to the problems of global warming.
Yes, leather begins to look worn. It also depends on the grade of leather though. Full Grain, Analine Dyed, Top Grain, etc. It also depends on which animal the leather comes from @Foxxee

@ROMARY wrote:A long, supple faux leather hooded coat is handy during rainy days.
Depending on the weather/area, some of the faux leather jackets are very nice.
I would like to see the faux leather look made of fabric.
Embossed fabric that looks like embossed leather. Probably polyester, but I'm not sure.
You will get soaking wet. You need a rainslicker or something with a lot of polyesther or treatment to the coat to avoid getting wet in the rain. Faux leather won't stop you from getting soaking wet. @ROMARY

@BirkiLady wrote:Give me the "real deal" of soft, supple leather (or suede) any day! I love wearing a good leather or suede coat for the drape and warmth. As far as shoes, boots, gloves and handbags? There is nothing else I'd carry. Manmade (plastics) look cheap because they ARE - and they crack. Who needs that nonsense?
Give me high quality goods that will last a long time and remain beautiful for the lifetime of use (often to be donated so another woman is able to enjoy the item(s) for even more years) and will never provide a landfill with plastic trash for decades of waste!
Me too. It's worth it an will definitely last longer than anything made from PVC or polyurethane @BirkiLady

I have lots of leather. Nothing hard about taking care of it. You wear it. Wipe away stains and put it away just like other garments when they are not in use. I have so much leather (some I can't wear because of weight gain) but I'm working on it. It's all just fine. There is no comparison. How would you wash fake leather pants? Would you put those in a machine? Remember it's not a skin so, how do you clean plastic @chrystaltree

Faux leather, pleather (a 1980's term still relevant), call it what you will- it is still a turnoff. Cold, rippable, unwashable and expensive. I don't have any interest in it. I am a "hand bag" person and will only buy good leather bags. This vegan ****** is just ridiculous. Thank you.

is FAUX really a "trend"? i had a "Leather Look" skirt and vest in the 6th grade. "The Leather Look" was IN in the late 60s! Faux leather.
i keep waiting for my nice '90s leather moto to come back in style. the shoulder pads are insane. i have a leather trench and a leather barn jacket, a leather scuba style and another slim fit leather moto . leather outerwear is NOT a great investment for me.
leather handbags, yes. but for air travel, i use microfiber.

@Mustang Shar wrote:Long ago we called it VINYL.... now it's faux leather. I can see it in handbags as long as it's not zero out, but definitely not warm and certainly NOT for the high prices. Ridiculous
@Mustang Shar Of course there also was the classy "Naugahyde!"

@sandy53 wrote:I do not usually care for faux anything. I like a good leather purse for fall/winter and I like my leather and suede jackets. But a friend had one of the Denim & Co faux leather jackets from a few years ago and it was lovely. The quality has improved, but I don't plan to buy. And I really don't understand the pants and leggings that are faux leather on the front and knit on the back. What?? Half and half??
The "half and half" seems to be prevelent in retail. I don't see a lot that look fantastic with knit on the backside and I certainly don't wear it. Not buying it!
