Fashion vs. Style

[ Edited ]

I'm working on some accessories for warmer weather and I just came across a quote from John Fairchild* in one of my pattern books:

"Style is an expression of individualism mixed with charisma.    Fashion is something that comes after style."

* John Fairchild former editor-in-chief and publisher of Women's Wear Daily.

I like this - for me:

Fashion = what others are telling me to wear

Style = what I am telling myself to wear

Thanks for sharing! Smiley Happy

Some people 'just have it'.  Maybe it's the way they carry themselves.  A certain amount of casual, natural self- esteem, no matter what they are wearing.  Just a thought, of course.

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).

I have to agree with ROMARY1.

You can dress two approximately same  sized women in identical outfits and they can look completely different, Why is that?

Just take a pair of jeans and a tshirt for instance -  one comes off as JUST wearing jeans and a tshirt and the other looks pulled together yet casual at the same time!

Have not figured out why that is.

I think this short page explains and discusses the relationship and differences between Fashion and Style very well.  I thought it was a fun read.

@CAMOGIRL@ROMARY. I think the difference is accessories. Just adding a belt to jeans & tee make a huge difference. Then add some jewelry, a boutique one of a kind jacket or bag and that's style. Style is taking what's ordinary fashion to the next level to make it your own.

Just because something is fashionable doesn't mean it will look stylish on you or someone else. For me what makes an outfit look good is when it fits my body well and knowing how to accessorize the outfit. For example, belts don't always look right on some of us and some do. Just depends.Woman Happy

I think anyone can buy fashion if they have enough money but not everyone has style. Style has to do with having the confidence to wear something well and exude an aura of confidence while wearing it.  I know it when I see it. It isn't something that one often sees but when I do it is always so much fun to observe.. Style is a gift and few and far between have "It."
