Brown with navy is very Ralph Lauren.

I wear a lot, a lot of navy - year round! With dresses or skirts, in the winter I wear navy tights and navy shoes. In the summer I wear a pinky nude shoe. With dress pants I always wear a navy shoe. With casual pants, I wear whatever color I want, usually a color that is not navy or nude. It depends on the color(s) of the top I'm wearing. I think you'd be fine wearing black or navy, although DD would probably say nude!

I've always felt as your daughter...altho it's not that navy and black are "not appropriate," it's that I just don't like the look. However, I'm more relaxed about that "rule" now because it seems to be acceptable.
I much prefer a pop of color with navy. I would wear certain shades of brown in winter and a pop of color in summer with navy before I would wear black.
I have a weird aversion to nude color shoes...go figure.

Thank you all. I think I will purchase a pair of nude pumps this spring to try. I appreciate all your advice.
I know many people here would tell their children to keep their oppinions of their clothing and shoe choices to themselves, but mine children at 26 and 29 are both very opinionated. Especially since I got rid of all of my shoes that hurt my feet and started buying clarks and sas shoes in my actual size. My feet no longer hurt when I walk, but my children tease me pretty badly. I tell them wait until they turn 50 and see how they feel.
Our feet age alot of young people don't understand this. Our bodies change and our styles change as well.

I've worn black, navy, red, and cordovan with navy. I think that the black with navy no-no days are long gone. Black shoes with sheer black hosiery would be elegant with navy. I wouldn't go hose-less. You need something to bridge the black and navy smoothly, and bare skin doesn't do it in my opinion.

I read in a fashion book many years ago that wearing black with navy dresses it up and wearing brown with navy "takes it down." The two other things I keep in mind are 1) if the navy is too dark, it doesn't look as good with black because it looks like a bad match rather than two distinct colors, and 2) navy shoes that don't match the navy of the clothing (there are SO many shades of navy) look far worse to me than wearing black with navy, especially when you sometimes see yet another shade of navy in tights/hosiery. Anyway, I think it mostly comes down to what you like best -- a lot depends on the item of clothing and the type of shoe you would like to wear with it (pump, sandal, loafer, etc.).

LOL! I can relate! I started wearing Birkenstocks and SAS sandals before my children were born. I would come in from wearing heels all day and put them on as soon as I got home. During summer vacation I lived in them. I never wore really high heels to begin with, even though I'm 5'3"!
DD may tease me (I don't think DS cares what I wear), BUT I have no foot or leg problems. I can stand all day, hike, and cover a huge mall without my feet getting tired. I see DD and her friends get ready to go out in their 4-5-inch heels, and take their Old Navy flip flops to change into later. I try to tell them to get some SUPPORTIVE shoes.
When DD started working in a professional office a few years ago, I bought her a cute pair of black Ballerina style Clarks. She loves them! She couldn't believe how comfortable they are. So there may be hope for them yet!

I agree with your daughter. With navy you can wear brown, bone or nude or white or navy but not black.

I think almost any color is fine, but personally I would tie the shoe color in with a scarf or bag .

Just sit outside in any sidewalk restaurant and watch the publixc go by and you will see that a very few care about how they look in today's American society. They "dress" for comfort only, if they bother to dress at all. I live in a beach resort town so we see mostly swimsuits with some kind of cover up - on the younger ladies it is a bikini top, flip flops and a pair of short cutoffs 90% of the time , everywhere they go. Some of those bikini tops being of highly questionable decency! the older ladies wear a swimsuit and shorts or a swimsuit with an actual coverup over it. occasionally I'll see a swimsuit top and a maxi skirt, which actually is a pretty nice look. Those who live here seem to wear capris or shorts and t shirts every day - me included. Except for church or an evening event - this is my uniform.
