I think the pictures from the 1700 and 1800's represent women of a certain class who had maids or household help to maintain and clean their wardrobe. These were not for the common folk. I think it was questionable how clean everything was too! The styles from the early 1900's and on seem to me to reflect politics, World Wars, and textiles available.

My favorite is 1966. I was a young teen coming into my own just before high school. I do like the clothing from this period. I am so glad that today we have so many choices available, and a washing machine with dryer near by .

The '30's and '40's were also my favorites as far as design and gorgeous fabrics. In my own lifetime, it had to be 1963, 64, and 65. Those styles were so attractive and everyone was so well porportioned; clothing fit like a glove when we were active and eating correctly. Most of us actually had 24-25" waists! (I still have a 29" waist.)

When I mentioned small waists of our generation to my DIL a couple of years ago, she couldn't believe it. Her generation was raised in front of the TV and on snacks and junk foods.

Yet it's clear in these dresses that waists were very, very tiny. Not only due to corsets, but I imagine due to small, healthy meals and walking rather than always having a vehicle available.

Favorite era = anytime the bustle wasn't a thing.

I do like the clean lines and classic feel of the 1930's and 1940's. I like closer to the body clothing vs full skirts for my body shape.

Here's a picture of my uncle's mother ... she was born in 1879 .... I don't know what year this was taken.  (Her son was married to my father's sister.)
