Do you wash brand new clothes before wearing?

I was shopping yesterday here in LA with a friend (by the way--the stores were mobbed, the lots full, and everything was very picked over) and when we got back to her house we went inside for a nice glass of chilled wine. While we were talking she got out scissors, cut off all the price tags, and put a load of it into the wash. She told me she would never wear anything straight off the rack, or even straight from mail order, without washing or dry cleaning.

So, is this just her little phobia or am I missing something?
