At 41 years old, Karen Neuburger was surprised to learn she was pregnant. With a baby on the way and her older daughter finishing high school, Karen decided to retire and enjoy some time at home. One day, looking for something to do, she made a pair of pajamas out of very soft fabric she’d found in the closet. The look caught on and soon enough women in the neighborhood were asking Karen for their own PJs.

Her idea kept growing. Soon, she was pitching the all-day sleepwear line to Nordstrom and Macy’s, and Oprah couldn’t stop raving about the PJs. She even came up with her first Oprah’s Favorite Things special in order to share her passion with the world.

By 2004, Karen’s $1 million had turned into $100 million. You’d think Karen would be living the high life. Instead, after a series of bad business decisions, Karen no longer owns the company.She can’t even use her name on other products. I loved her pj's,they use to sell in high end stores years ago,now you can buy them in discount stores.

 Sad.  I have so many night shirts and short sets from TJMaxx.  They are really nice, but I wouldn't pay full price for them.

Thanks!  I didn't know that but I have several night shirts from Nordies that are ancient--and still look and wear great.  I don't wear them every night, but sometimes before going to bed to read and relax.  They are excellent quality.  I'd rather have something like that that is well made of good material and pay four times more for it than something sleezy that is never wonderful to wear and will not last long.

I didnt know that but I remember reading somewhere in an article about business that one should always retain the rights to the use of ones name.  Although I am sure she never imagined that she would need to

I've always liked this line.  Much better than the Carole Hochman products offered on QVC.  Fabrics seem nicer and softer.

@Kachina624, I'm seeing more & more women out & about in their pj's so she may have.  

Personally , I'm never going further than the door of my house in pj's.

Then again, the women who do are a whole lot younger than me!  I might be an old fuddy duddy about this.  🙂

Ignorance on display for all to see:  before today, I don't recall ever hearing of her. Not a big Oprah watcher, four hours from great stores like Nordstrom. That said, it is a major shame that her legal and financial advisors at the pinnacle of her success and afterward would have let her sell the rights to her name. Too many were drunk on her success. My name will always be owned by me and only me. Now I just have to invent something spectacular!
