I have both styles of cardigans and I think it depends what outfit you are wearing.

Sometimes I like the option of being able to button one or two buttons or just having a flowy open one.   I am not so much a blazer person so I love cardigans.

I prefer not having any closure to my cardi's.  I like it open as I feel to restricted wearing it closed up.   I don't really wear cardi's to keep me warm but as an accent to what I am wearing.

I prefer my cardigans to have buttons and zippers....it adds a visual interest.  However, I never use them and don't think the look is sloppy!

I prefer buttons on my cardigans. I don’t have any without buttons. I leave my solid cardigans open with a top underneath. I wear my printed cardigans buttoned up as a stand alone top most of the time. 

I rarely button a cardigan for warmth. I don’t think open cardigans are sloppy.
