Doubt anyone actually needs thumb holes.  I have a couple of tops with them and I like to wear them out walking my dog in the morning when it's a little chilly but I don't need a jacket.  But like others have said, most tops have sleeves that are long enough to cover at least part of our hands.  Really, it's just a kind of cute look (to some).

My fingers get colder than my hands. These cuffs w/ holes only cover part of the hand, right? I still need gloves.

Years ago I bought a sweater and had no idea why it had holes in the sleeves until one day I saw someone with their thumbs in them. I just don't use them and it wouldn't stop me from buying something else that had them.
