Converting cold shoulder dresses and tops?

To all those who know about sewing and alterations.....

Is it possible to convert cold shoulder tops and dresses to "normal" attire. I think it's too trendy and am finding many nice sweaters, tops, and dresses have this feature. It looks good on some, not all. It's not to my taste.

Thanks for your help.

What do you mean by normal attire?  I guess you want to fill in the cold shoulder space?  No it would not be easy and it would look odd.

Re: Converting cold shoulder dresses and tops?

I bought one from Simonton several years ago.  All I did was cut off the sleeve and made it sleeveless.

On an SG top that had slits in the top of the sleeve - I did the same thing ... made it sleeveless.

My idea somewhere on these boards was to wear a lightweight tee underneath. (Black tee or other colors that would match or look nice under the openings.)  The underlying tee would show through.  Something similar to distressed jeans with an underlying fabric under the torn holes.

I guess I've been watching quite a few The Nanny re-runs.  Nanny Fran wears many low cut strapless and thin strapped dresses over black turtleneck tops.  'Kind of cute', if you ask me.

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).

Re: Converting cold shoulder dresses and tops?

I also have analyzed some tops and had the same thought - there's 2 layers of dust on my sewing machine; but have been known to make clothes........your question............if the sleeve has a round cut-out for a true cold shoulder = no can't see where it would work satisfactory.  But if it's just a 'slit' = yes no problem. Most of what we see, that big bare hole, would be impossible to fill in and look normal. (would pucker, insert wouldn't lay smoothly)  Suggestion:  Just shop for normal clothes!

I second the suggestion of looking for regular tops!  Unless you're a very skilled seamstress, who could add fabric into the holes, i wouldn't try to convert cold-shoulder to regular.  I think it would be a challenge even for a skilled seamstress, as you'd have to work around the curve of the shoulder.

Too many variables, cold shoulder usually is a semi circle where the fabric is missing, it would be impossible to lift the sleeve to cover up the cut out

Stop being afraid of what could go wrong and start being positive what could go right.

I never liked this style from the very start.  IMO, nobody looks good in it.  I would just donate to Goodwill.

I can't think of a way to fill in a cold shoulder top where it would look good. When they go out of style, you can still wear them as layering pieces under jackets or cardigans, if they're not too bulky.

Re: Converting cold shoulder dresses and tops?

Not a fan of them, in general. I would go into stores and would see what I thought was a great top--until I saw the bare shoulder silhouette. Had seen some major markdowns and was pondering the possibility of rescuing them. (No, I didn't purchase. Just thought it prudent to ask around first.)

To all who took the time to read and offer suggesions. Many thanks!
