It depends on whether I'm seeking form or function... Anything other than a shorter jacket is a problem for driving and, in fact, I've come to prefer sleeveless vest jackets for just that reason... Otherwise, longer coats can be very attractive.

Mid thigh length. Too active for a long coat, although the warmth from them is nice.

The longer the better--love the Maxi's or whatever they are currently called. I don't drive and live in the northeast. When I'm not lucky enough to get a ride being as protected as possible from the cold and wind while waiting for a bus or a cab is vital for me.
I also like the elegance of the maxis--I have four black ones--two faux fur, one all wool, one trimmed in real fur on the collar. I also have a swing coat style coat--not as long, of course--of mouton fur in a brown shade that I picked up for a song in a thrift shop. It is very heavy to wear but oh so toasty warm. The only just below the knee coat I own is French blue and has vest pockets inside the left--like a man's jacket or coat--love that feature and wish they would do that with women's coats.
