I have a "discretionary" monthy amount that I can spend on whatever.  Sometimes it's clothes, sometimes it's other stuff.

Re: Clothing Budget

[ Edited ]

No but I really like @Shanus's strategy.  I would rather have a few well chosen clothes that a closet of ok.  I am reminded of the beginning of the school year shopping trips with my mom when I was young.  The clothing was always traditional/conservative and of good quality and I was allowed to select a few pieces for the upcoming school year.  Then we would always have lunch together.  I still can remember clothing that I selected when I was in elementary school.  Thanks for posting this as I've been thinking of weeding my closet and creating my capsule wardrobe.

Do you have a set yearly budget for clothes in your family per month or annually? Mine has been a monthly budget but I seem to go much longer before making purchases so I am planning set an amount for two larger purchase times. I generally shop about this time with tax free weekend and in January. I have boys in college and this seems like a better plan.

No. I'm single with no dependents so that is not a concern for me.

I am pretty good about not buying in excess & I'm a skilled bargain shopper (it is my favorite sport!) so I get good deals most of the time. I usually buy based on need; I'm not an impulse shopper.

@willdob3  I'm working from a capsule wardrobe of basic, high priced items. I only purchase something really special that fits well with what I already own. I don't like clutter in my closet, so my purchases don't require a budget. I also bargain shop when possible.

@RhondaRena,   I am not familiar with Tax Free weekend, please explain.  I do not have a clothes budget.  As a matter of fact, I do not have a budget.  As soon as I receive my SS check, I write out my check for rent so I am guaranteed a roof over my head.  Then I pay cable, phone, Internet, one major charge card and Target.  I place money into savings and the rest is for food, entertainment or if I need clothes or beauty items.

I don't really have a set clothing budget.

Why is it, when I have a 50/50 guess at something, I'm always 100% wrong?

I love some of these responses. On a tax free weekend, some states allow a weekend of clothing, computers and school supplies to be purchased tax free. I also have a capsule type wardrobe. I mainly purchase from Talbots, J Jill, some Ebay where I like Eileen Fisher, J crew and Garnet Hill. Here at the Q I pick up a few Linea pieces. I shop sales and average about two handbags a year and usually 4 or 5 pairs of shoes. I have sold several things this last year on Thread Up. I like a streamlined closet. Less clutter is good. I try to take care of what I purchase and I really think it through cost per wear. Good shoes and a nice handbag are important but can be found with good sales. I am currently carrying a great bag from Talbots that I got with their point system. My mom puts her clothes on my card and then pays it off and that helps build up my points. I don't think you have to spend a lot to look presentable. Ebay can be a great source.

That is what I mean when I said in my post I have always been attracted by clothes even as a young girl.  I too can still remember shopping with my mother for  new school clothes and can remember the clothes we bought.  I remember the first item I purchased when my mother let me go on my own with my girlfriend to school clothes shop; it was a white dress with purple polka dots!  I remember my high school clothes and also the great clothes I bought when I started working and had funds to buy what I wanted.  Believe me, that was many years ago, but I sitll remember them.  I don't like the shopping part much, just the clothes.

I'm single with no children and fortunate in that I've always had a great salary and never needed a clothing budget.  I don't buy high end designer clothes; clothing that I buy falls within the range that Qvc and HSN charge.  So, I pretty much buy whatever I want, whenever I want.

No budget for me. If I need something, I buy it. If I want it, I usually buy it, but will sometimes decide that I'll wait until it goes on sale and hope it's still available. I'd much rather have high quality over quantity, but that doesn't mean I'm going to rule something in or out just based on price.

I don't have a budget per se, but when I know I'm able to spend some money on clothes, I do. Because my finances are very limited (single, live on my own so no second income coming in), I do a mini "splurge" and won't buy for months at a time. But summer fashion clearance is on Evine tonight and all day tomorrow, so I will be tuning into see what I could get.
