When I was in my teens, every girl in the school wore a girdle, even the skinniest girls. Nothing was supposed to "shake" when we walked. If someone didn't wear a girdle (which was rare) there would be gossip. Then came "garter belts" which we wore with our stockings and the clips always showed through our clothing and made red marks on our thighs. Nothing was ever comfortable!
Finally, around the late sixties, pantyhose were invented and we wore them for many years.
Now for the last ten years or so, I cannot tolerate anything tight around my waist. I buy underwear two sizes too large just so they don't dig into my waist. My daughters laugh at me, but that's just the way it is. If I didn't do that, I'd have to wear bikini underwear!
Brings back a funny memory. Back in the eighties when I still had a boyfriend, a bunch of us gals were sitting around the pool (including his mother) and we were talking about pretty underwear. My boyfriend walked by, heard us, and said "What difference does it make, it always winds up on the floor anyway!!" He had a booming voice and we laughed so hard. I was somewhat embarrassed, but everyone found it funny and I've never forgotten that scene! (Hope that is not too risqué for you, tee hee.)
