Another question about what to wear

I am invited to a wedding that is a pretty big affair: old money marrying governor's daughter.  It is predicted 44 degrees daytime. The ceremony takes place, outside. It's March 28, which means spring but 44 degrees daytime. I don't know why people marry outside before the flowers are blooming but not my call.  The reception is inside what once was a barn (converted into a social gathering place). Services 6 p.m. and reception 7 p.m. until.

What do you wear.  It's spring and the wedding is outside but the weather is not spring-like.

The bride's grandmother says most of her firends are wearing cocktail-length dresses, not maxi length.  However, social norm dictates wearing of a long dress to an evening wedding after 5.

Re: Another question about what to wear

I have gone to many many black tie fancy weddings and never wore a maxi length dress. Always wore a cocktail type knee length dress as did many of the guests.in the end wear what you are comfortable wearing.

Re: Another question about what to wear

I would wear dressy pants (better to keep warm!)) and a dressy top.  First thought would be to rent a fake fur stole or jacket for outside.  Can't think of what would be appropriate and practical for an outdoor wedding with temps in the 40s???  Hope the ceremony is brief--LOL!

March 28th?

That's a whole month away and no way can weather be predicted that far in advance.  Heck, around here we're lucky if they can get the next hour right.

Re: Another question about what to wear

I don't know what part of the country that you're talking about but in my area it could be 44 or even snow....we have had blizzards in SE PA in the middle of March and lighter snow in April.

You say that it's in an old converted barn.  Is this a casual venue or something that was created to be more formal?

I would wear chiffon black pants with a dressy top & jacket....long sleeved since it sounds cold.  Or a dressy jumpsuit with a dressy jacket.

A long dress just seems a bit dated to me just like the old rule of not wearing black to a wedding.  You will probably see a lot of women wearing black too. I like dressy pants but I prefer to be comfortable.

@Nonametoday - I agree with @Janey2. I have been to weddings in March, and I also remember being chilly! The only time I wear maxi dresses is for casual beach weddings in the summer.

For formal weddings I wear what the bride's grandmother suggests, making sure I have a wrap or ruana that will look dressy and keep me warm!  Smiley Happy

The building should be heated so you can wear cocktail attire!  That is what it does!  And most such places have valet parking so you don't need to be outside very long!

I would go fancy and take a good coat for being outside!
