I'm very large busted, darts and seams on shirts and blouses pull and cause gapping, especially on button downs so I avoid them, no matter if it's high end quality or not.

Darts make room for the bust. Pulling and gaping are from not buying the correct size.

Re: All the special seaming and darts...

I couldn't believe my eyes the other day (had to back the tv up) but on a Halston show I could swear that I saw a closeup of a blouse that had a dart ONLY on 1 side! The left as I recall. The other side kinda slid over and it just looked darn weird. Like they forgot the other dart. If you know anything about sewing your eye just went right to that lone big ole dart and ya wonder why just one? Bad design I guess.

We're told they're flattering; they make us look slimmer, give us a waist, act as smoke and mirrors, and even give an illusion that we're taller. Do you think all the special seaming and darts do that? I sometimes think darts are just another sales tool for customers who wore darts years ago. I recently purchased an albaster color crepe top that had darts. When I finally tried the top with a new pair of pants this weekend, I found the top to be see-through and the darts putting attention where I don't want attention. I don't see anyone I work with or anyone I see out with darts. I'm also confused about the seam above some peplums. I don't think they work very well for me. Granted, some specific seams can be helpful, along with the basic shape of the garment, but I probably don't want princess seams that outline my bust and/or stomach. I'll pass on darts, peplum seams, and some princess seams. What are your thoughts on seams?

I think they old fashioned and outmoded for most of today's clothes.  I also think they can't make mass produced clothing to "flatter" using darts and seaming like this because bodies are so different.

So it's sort of a left over from Mrs. Cleaver.  So much clothing today is knit or made for different lifestye than the dart and seam days of yore. SO are bodies different from those days.   And undergarments!

@Sooner, Also, June Cleaver wore cotton which stands out from the body.  Many knits will show cellulite when they lie against areas that are not well toned too, causing a problem June Cleaver never had to deal with.

The darts are always in the wrong place for me. I hate them.

If you look at the models wearing things with darts sold here they're never in the right place.

I think we are al,l pretty much in agreement here that the models all wear clothes that don't really fit them well.

Fit could be one reason....but i  think darts only look good if your chest lines up in the same place as the darts...otherwise the darts could be above or below and buckle up....even on a well made garment....Not everyone i have seen has had tops that are ill fitting being the cause of the darts being odd fitting or lumpy....

Re: All the special seaming and darts...

Prime example today....(Monday)....IM's noon show ...Jackie the blond model showing his lace high low top and the darts were about two inches above her chest....and the top definately seemed the right size and not tight......at first i thought it was pulling under the arm....but then realized it was the darts bunching up...
