Advice on Arctic Expedition Coat A458834

Does anyone have the AE coat I've linked below?  The reviews are all over the place concerning size and warmth.  I need a coat that I can use to walk my dog at temps/wind chill between 10-20 degrees.  Will this coat be warm enough if I layer, which I always do?  Also, I've never bought this brand before.  I wear a S in Denim & Co., and according to the garment measurements, I would wear a S (which I don't know how that can be--most of my coats are a M).  If I order this, should I get a S or M?  Thank you for any and all opinions!

I didn't get this particular Arctic Expedition coat but I did get A546051.

It is a very well made coat and very warm.  Wore it here in Chicago when it was in the teens with a wind chill in the single digits and I was warm without wearing a sweater underneath.

But it was also very heavy.  I ordered an xl, my usual size in coats and it was a bit big.  I wound up sending it back since I also got 2 coats from Lands End, almost as warm and almost half the price.

Sorry I can't help with your specific jacket, but I found the AE brand very well made.

You can also check AE's website but I found their prices to be higher.

@kaydee50 thank you so much for mentioning their website.  It does say that the warmth factor is sub-zero so hoping that is correct.  But...according to the website measurements, it says that if I'm between sizes (bust is a S but waist and hips are a M) to go with the larger size, which would be a medium.  According to the garment measurements on the Q, I would be a small, though.  What to do; what to do...

Hi @Ainhisg

I have had other Arctic Expedition coats and have found them to be warm in cold weather.  But for me, that coat is too short.  My legs would freeze in it when the temperature is in the teens and low 20s!  When it is that cold, I like my coats to get closer to the tops of the knees for walking, or longer if I'll be standing outside.  I know folks from Chicago are hardier than me in the cold, so maybe it works for you.

With regards to sizing and garment measurements, I am sure you know this, but remember you may need extra inches to account for puffiness, because the puffiness makes garments tighter, and for the volume of layers you may be wearing underneath in the winter.

If I were you, I would get the M, that's your usual size??  And you say you would wear a sweater underneath anyway.  It was a very well made jacket.  And the price of yours is very reasonable.

Good luck!

I have this coat. Let me say, it has its pluses and minuses. It is not nearly as warm as the Arctic expedition coat they had is a TSV a couple of years ago. That coat was much, much better made and much warmer. This coat is just OK. I bought mine on another site. The storm cuffs are made of nylon, not the nice thick ones that they usually use. It's a decent length, and I'll wear it when it's chilly, but not freezing. If you live in a very cold climate, I would say this might not be the one for you. There's no further on the hood, and it feels cheaply made compared to others I have. This one ran smaller too.

Re: Advice on Arctic Expedition Coat A458834

I don't have this AE coat, but I have two others.  I sized up for both of them.  I'm tall and can almost always use some extra length and that's the only way to get some.  Also, if I'm wearing my "big coat", I'm probably wearing more than one layer and one of those layers is probably a sweater.

I think my AE coats are nice quality and well made and keep me warm.  My concern with this coat is if I'm worred about being warm, I want a coat to cover my behind.  This is a coat I'd wear in the car, not one I'd reach for to walk the dog.

@Effie54 thank you so much! The warmth of the coat is the biggest deciding factor. And it sounds like I need to order a medium no matter what style I choose if any. Do you or anyone else have one they can recommend from the Q? Hoping for a good price (or maybe one to go on my wishlist for a drop in price) and prefer one that is not constricting around the legs for driving purposes.

To address other concerns, I usually wear fleece leggings with a base layer under those so I am plenty warm on the bottom. I power walk in all kinds of weather so have lots of cold weather clothing geared for activity. My current need for a really warm winter coat is that my dog is now taking lasix making frequent and long walking a must. He can stop and sniff a million times and takes forever in some places. Those of you with dogs know what I'm talking about. Lol  So not moving a lot makes me really notice the cold and wind.

Maybe A517544.  It's As Is but available in medium in several colors.

I second this choice. This reminds me of the coat I purchased 2 years ago, but is now sold out on QVC. I like this coat and it looks warm to me, and affordable. Are usually go with my regular size, because this brand runs a little tight in the shoulders and in the arms.
