Because my home serves as a bird home, bird bed and breakfast, bird rehab and bird hospice, I've witnessed many a bird crossing over the bridge.

For a few seconds each time, I've felt like a portal has opened and I've felt the presence of something sacred.  The birds I have been with always inhale one more time and then spread their wings out as if they are taking flight.  By the time their wings retract, they are gone.

It's been my honor to be there to witness the transition.  I was so blessed to experience it with Peewee since I was there the day she hatched.  I pray that I am able to do the same with her brother Poppi.

@Bird mama That's so beautiful... curious, do you have them euthenized or let them go naturally?

After Charlie died all I had to do was get close to Squiggy and say his name, "Squiggy, can you feel Charlie here with us?" and his little eyes would close - relax - like he did in fact feel his presence. So when Squiggy was getting ready for liftoff in November, I asked my vet if she believes they rejoin their furry friends when they cross over, and she said yes. Between growing up on a farm and being a first-rate vet, her instincts would be good on this. Vet told me after the first shot (tranquilizer) they can't see anymore but they can smell and hear. So I told Squiggy, look for Charlie, because he's there waiting for you.

I haven't watched PMS in a couple years, so I tuned in this morning.  That first hour, when everything was on clearance, many items were just too pricey.  Switched over to the other QVC channel to see a $400 vacuum cleaner.

Yes, Leah had on too many items at once.

@Bird mama

I believe that every living thing has a light inside of them that is their spirit.

When they cross, I believe this energy connects with us, the living, and it is infinite the other things this energy can do.

In one single moment, the light unites ALL ... the heavenly spirit, the cosmic spirit, the human spirit (living and non-living) and the animal spirit. I believe they are all the same thing.

When my father passed, I was there. This connection was never made more evident to me in that moment.

I did not have this opportunity with my mother, and this just bothers me until this very day.

It has been cold here since Wednesday, so I did take all of the Christmas stuff down, cleaned out the file cabinet & made a double batch of orange drop cookies & a double batch of chocolate chip cookies.

Yesterday my cousin called at 4:00 & said she was in town & could she come over.  Of course she could.  I don't mind drop in company.  DH & I had dinner plans so we went our usual time.  She stayed over, so I did have to get the guest bedroom made up.  For some reason her cell phone has been ringing about every 3 minutes.  She can't hear it n the basement, but it has been serenading me most of the night.

Our local DQ has it's yearly 1/2 price on everything today, so one of my GF's & her DH are coming up around noon.  It will be busy but fun.

Wishing all that are ailing a speedy recovery.

I am so saddened by the FL airport shootings yesterday.  DH & I just signed up to go to Riviera Maya in March with one of my BF's from HS & her DH.  We are all celebrating our wedding anniversaries.

Even though it is very cold, the sunshine feels wonderful.

Off to catch some more zzzzzz.

Can you mention the hotel, some on Riveria Maya are better than others. Also some are closer to the airport than others

We stay at the Blue Bay Grand Esmeralda.  This will be our 4th time there.  I always hope that they won't disappoint us & have been lucky.  There are 10 restaurants including some fabulous buffets.  About 1/2 hour from the airport on a shuttle bus.  Since it is a large resort we take advantage of the golf carts.  There are 4 buildings on the ocean front & 4 behind.  We get the front ones as we are very close to the huge beautiful pool & ocean.  We usually only take a taxi once to go to the next town to shop or look. This resort is AI so all of meals are eaten there.

Good to know, we stayed at the Occidental near Xcaret, it was awful, horrible and gross, the food and service were terrible, took over an hour from Cancun and just an awful experience. I booked thru a travel agent and she lead us astray.

Re: AMS Live Chat, 1/7, 7:00

@Buttercups

I just saw your question about euthanasia.  Most of the outdoor birds that come to me for hospice services, come very near end of life.  Sometimes it's a matter of 15 minutes after I see them or sometimes it takes a couple of hours.  They are practically in what I call 'the in between' place already so I set up the makeshift incubator and keep them warm, safe and comfy until they pass.  For the ones that arrive shortly before, and I mean shortly, I've picked them up, held them for less than 5 minutes and then saw them depart.

For Peewee, I could tell something was up with her, but didn't know what in mid June of that year.  The best was I can describe it was like watching a clock winding down.  She ate slower, she flew slower (like a fledgling when they are learning to fly).  She continued to eat and drink and the day of, I noticed she was sitting in an area outside of her habitat that was not the norm for her.  I looked at her and said, my sweetheart, is it time?

I gathered a small wicker basket, lined it with a towel, put it on the heating pad and placed her in it.  We looked at each other and I softly recounted the story of her birth and told her how much I loved her and thanked her for adding so much to my life.  I would say she departed within 20 minutes of me asking her if it was time.

Because my birds live an unusually free way, I've had to educate myself on how to euthanize a bird in the event I develop some kind of fatal illness that would take me first.  I'm praying I never have to do it.

There are many elements: wind, fire, water
But none quite like the element of surprise
