Re: A.M. Style Live Chat, 7:00, 12/14

Seems like its been Friday the 13th all week, I was awake very early with B on Wed, he leaves 15 minutes he comes back, screaming he lost his cell phone, I calm him down, head out to the ae with him in the snow and he leaves, I walk back in and find his phone on top of the mails boxes, my neighbor must of found it, I call him he retrieves the phone. Ten minutes later he calls in another tizzy he cant find his train pass, he is ranting and raving, I hang up and 3 minutes later he calls the he found it and is on the train. I can not wait  and I am counting the days to his April 30 retirement date

Re: A.M. Style Live Chat, 7:00, 12/14

Good morning everyone. This week I received a $15 credit from Zappos for linking my Zappos VIP with my Prime membership. It's fine, Amazon owns Zappos. Zappos had a daily deal on Asics gel sneakers for $35. I had another unused $5 Zappos credit so I got a pair for $14.99. Hope they work for me, I walk so much that I can always use another pair of sneakers. Got black.

@Bird mama My Mom's friend loved the Enesco Holy Family figurine. She's so special to me that I really wanted to get her something special. It was meant to be that I saw your post☺

Re: A.M. Style Live Chat, 7:00, 12/14

@LTT1  has been retired for too long, LOL, because it's one week to go until break, and teaching on Friday the 13th has never been a day for increased focus.

Thursday (10 days ago) my teacher specialist from the BOE and I talked on the phone and planned for her to come out on Thursday the 12th.  We did not tell the department on which day she would be there, because we were going to do walkthroughs.  For those in the non-teaching world, a walkthrough is an unannounced check-in, where we drop in for 10-15 minutes and see a "snapshot" in time.  She told them (per our discussion) that she would be looking for 3 items: student engagement, 90% target language usage, and adherence to our model of lesson planning. I knew that on Thursday, the day where I had my personal planning and a departmental planning period, that she would most likely use both of those periods for walkthroughs and feedback.

A week in review.

I proctored the S.A.T. on Saturday, so half the day was taken up with that.  I knew that I would have to get my planning done over the weekend, so Sunday was spent on that and grading.

On Monday morning, I received word that I would have a formal observation on Tues. the 17th, during the last period of the day. This means that I had to have my pre-conference on Friday the 13th.  For the pre-conference, the four page lesson plan has to be completed, plus all samples of any handouts from that day, plus the previous class and the class that follows.  That way they can see what you did the class before and what you're planning on doing in the next class.  This means that I have to have all classes for the week of the 17th planned out and copied as well.

I had received word that I would have to RELOCATE my classes all day on Tuesday/Wednesday (the day of the observation) to the library, as they were using the room as a testing location for one of those high stakes standardized tests.  There is a large group of students who will be testing all day, and then they will be released to last period.

I emailed my AP and asked if we could move the observation to Thursday, the 17th (one day before break) due to the relocation.

On Tuesday I received a one line response-"share predicted impacts."

What?!  How might moving my classes into a different building with no desks, that is a "quiet" space, impact teaching my language class of 35 students?  So I wrote a detailed email outlining why the seating chart I was supposed to provide and other items that indicate that "routines", "safe and orderly environment for learning" blah blah might be interrupted, as there is a large section of the form that shows that students are part of their environment (their work is on the walls, it is a shared space, etc).  Guess what?  She NEVER wrote back.

On Monday afternoon (sorry for the short notice!) I received word that Counseling was meeting in the morning to discuss whether a student of mine (who bounces off the walls) could benefit from a 504 plan.  Could I just write up all of the anecdotal evidence from this semester and send it to her for the 7:30 a.m. meeting the next day.

So on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings I had to plan for my three preparations and grade, as well as wonder about this formal observation.

I stayed up late on Monday finding items for classes and depositing them into our Google Drive so that on Tuesday morning I could assemble my lessons.  Every lesson has to have the four skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening, so each class has about 15 PowerPoint lessons with activities.  On Tuesday, I got to work to put the materials from Google Drive into Powerpoint, so that I could follow the lesson sequence, and the Internet went down.  This would have been sort of manageable, but then we lost the network, so I could not print anything that I had saved, nor could I open the lesson from the day before that I repeated with that group's students.  The internet came back about 10 minutes before my class started, but I didn't have access to any of my documents housed on the drive.

On Tuesday afternoon, we were to have finished grading for interim reports.  Of course, since we didn't have access to the internet no one could add any grades.  I stayed late and finished the grades, and then 24 hours later they need to be saved to the school drive, which I still can't access.  I had to email a different AP who tracks this to say that I had generated the report for my students but I could not house it in the drive for the grader to print.

Wednesday everyone tried to recover whatever had been lost from the network meltdown.  It was wellness Wed., so I went to tai chi, which helped a bit with the stress.

On Thursday I arrived to make the copies that I needed for the day, and the top feeder of the copier ATE the papers that I had printed from home for that day's lessons.  When I pulled them out, they were folded like an accordion, so I had to reprint from another computer and try this again.  That took almost 40 minutes of the morning.

I was getting text messages from my people looking for feedback, which I couldn't write up since I was teaching and mostly that is the job of the specialist.  She met with the AP, the one who is observing and never got back to me, and suggested that I call her after school.  After school I had a diversity meeting for an hour, and when I called her on the way home she didn't answer.

So now it's Thursday evening, I need to plan for my observation lesson as well as the class after, and type up the paperwork.  The document only opens using Internet Explorer (most of the computers default to Chrome).  When I got home, I worked on the actual what I am I going to do part of the lesson.  That took until about 10 p.m.  I went to download and open via IE, and the document doesn't open, so I had to type up a four page document from a school based computer.

On Friday I got up at 3:40, took care of a few things, and I went in to school 40 minutes early so that I could work on the typing. I knew that one person would be out, but as it turns out there were two people out (one put the job into the system in November but never said anything).

Of course, my meeting was for 11, which is 12 minutes into my planning period.  I had to type part of it during class, and hustle to get it printed.  We were also having a lockdown drill at 11:35 (my conference was from 11-11:30).  I finished teaching, I dragged a cart of computers from room to room because I teach in multiple rooms, and 7 minutes before our meeting I got a text message that she would need to reschedule.

WHAT?

So now it's Saturday morning, I have no idea if the observation is happening on Tuesday.  The pre-conference would have to happen on Monday, but I haven't been "invited" to one.  I announced to my kids (because I won't see them again until Tuesday) to meet me in the library, and that I would message them in Google Classroom if something changes.

Oh, and someone is out on Monday (that I know of).  If there is no sub, guess who gets to cover classes?

Re: A.M. Style Live Chat, 7:00, 12/14

If anyone is interested in the Asics sneakers on Zappos they're still $34.99. Don't know what they have left for sizes, but lots of color options. On the home page. Ordered mine yesterday and they're supposed to be delivered Monday, can't beat their free fast delivery. Of course who knows , with all the delivery issues being reported here and on the news.

There was a delivery delay in my Enesco Holy Family figurine even with my Amazon Prime. I'm just happy I ordered in plenty of time.
