I agree with @I am still oxox, it is probably an orthodox shul. Even in an orthodox shul, black is not de rigueur, though modesty and inobtrusiveness is. I was recently at an orthodox funeral and frankly, people were so upset, I don't think anybody really knew what anybody was wearing....as long as boobs weren't hanging out, shoulders exposed and there weren't slits up to the pupik!
