20 fashion rules you should resolve to break

from Elle (http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/02/living/break-fashion-rules-elle/index.html?hpt=hp_bn11)

1. No white after Labor Day

2. You shouldn't wear white to someone else's wedding

3. Don't let your bra show

4. You must wear a belt if your shirt is tucked in

5. Legs or cleavage. Never both

6. Sparkle is just for the evening

7. Tall women shouldn't wear heels

8. Short women shouldn't wear long dresses

9. Don't wear socks with open toed shoes

10. When it comes to jewelry, less is more

11. You should dress for your body type

12. When wearing a dress or a skirt at a formal event (wedding, job interview, etc.) you must wear tights or pantyhose

13. Never wear gold and silver jewelry together

14. You have to spend a lot for great quality

15. Shorts are only for summer

16. Everyone should own _______

17. If someone is wearing the same outfit as you, you should keep your distance

18. Don't mix animal prints

19. You should take fashion seriously, because the way you're dressed says a lot about you

20. Great style can't be learned

From what I've read, most here would agree with #1 and disagree with #12. I, of course, am just the opposite. I thought the article was interesting, even though I don't necessarily agree with it.

#3-I don't care what Elle mag says, bras shouldn't show, not even the straps & #12, I do think it's still proper to wear hosiery at a job interview

I have to laugh when I see these things.

As far as I'm concerned there's only one rule:

1. There are no fashion rules.

Re: 20 fashion rules you should resolve to break

Reading through this list gives me a reason to be happy I am growing old. I don't want to see what the world will be like.

So its okay to let your bra show ? How in the world is that okay ? Sorry - no matter how pretty your bra is, I have no interest in seeing someone's underwear.

I've got a hard time mixing prints - but mixing animal prints ? really ?

Shorts worn other than summer - okay - so I should be wearing shorts all through the polar vortexes ?

Legs or cleavage - never both ? Why is that - so the style is the trashier the better?

I could go on and on, but I'll stop.... Please don't get me wrong - I am not sitting here typing furiously angry. Trying to express my opinion with a little humor. In my opinion, most of these rules are not meant to be broken.

I tend to agree with most of the rules. Guess I'm not going to start any trends. Wink

WHY would someone wear all-white to a wedding?

Has anyone seen someone with their bras showing that looked GOOD?

etc.

#7 and 8 we could lose... #12 is gone, but a lot of these are common sense.

Who makes up these rules? I never heard of the not wearing white to a wedding until I came to this BB - but I had also never heard you are only supposed to give cash as a wedding gift til i came here so i consider both rules lame. So - #11 - the OP does not think we should dress for our body type? Hum, interesting. Whose body type should we be dressing for?

I agree with most of your points, PhilaLady1. I read the article online and thought it would be interesting to discuss, but like I said in the opening post, I don't necessarily agree with the writer.

Personally, I don't care for animal prints, and never wear even one, much less a menagerie, on my body. I totally think "less is more" and although I wear very bright colors and some dramatic pieces, my clothing is very modest.

Consider this my feeble attempt to steer the conversations away from "OMG! Logo"

Well, I guess I'm just too conditioned to just let everything go out the window. #9 - I guess you mean trouser socks are okay because bulky gym socks would look geeky. #11 - I agree that we have to take our body types into consideration. Unfortunately age and genes will dictate that. #16, who the h-ll says anyone SHOULD own this or that.

Re: 20 fashion rules you should resolve to break

Well, there's a very old and very conservative group on this board. They probably agree with the whole list. But I agree with 2, 4, 9, 11 and 13. For 16, I say every woman should own a good pair of classic black pumps. I'm 54 and even though I know in my head that some things are okay now, my heart tells me differently. There are rules instilled in me by my mom and my grandmother that I can't make myself break. I would never wear white to someone's wedding. And socks? I only wear socks when I wear sneakers. And I never wear sneakers.
