security for phone apps - need advice

I use Sprint. I had a smartphone...HTC Evo 4G. I went into the sprint store and they said sprint had its own security... They took off my apps (virus protection).

I just got a new phone Samsung Epic. Lots of protection choices in apps market. Yikes, I am wondering if the sprint guys were wrong and I should be adding apps to protect the phone.

Anyone have any information of cell phone security. Mine is obviously Android.
