"You've Got Mail" notice - Help, please

Regarding Outlook Express: Can someone tell me how to set it to let me know when I have received mail? I have gone into "tools / options" within O/L Express and the radio box is checked for "play sound when new message arrives" but it does not do that. It certainly is not vital to getting mail but I am just curious as to why it is not notifying me. Any suggestions? TIA for any remedies offered!
