question about home network

Our desktop runs Windows XP. I want to check to make sure that our home network is secure. Or whatever the term is to make sure that no one can use our connection to get on the internet without using a password.

I know that when I set up my iPad, it asked for our network password, so I assume it is, but I wanted to check to make sure. Can someone point me in the right direction please?
