problem downloading pics to laptop.

I plugged the cable from the camera into the usb port on my Gateway....nothing happens! On my other computer (which just died) the pictures would automatically appear. Does anyone know what I need to do to remedy this problem? I have pics from Niagara Falls that I was hoping to show my family, but no luck so far. Is there an app that I download ???? I appreciate any help.
